Sometimes there’s value in starting a conversation that finishes on another day. There’s worth in open discourse, and ideas that are supposed to sit with you for a while. And often, the toughest questions are the ones most worth finding answers to. So, under the heading of “for what it’s worth”, I offer a topic which hits rare breeds particularly hard: The need to communicate well within our own breed and with our fellow breeders. In breeds that may see between two and ten litters born each year, there’s no space to find your small band and work within it. Maybe there are five active breeders in your breed. Maybe there are less. When you’re preserving a rare breed, you set favoritism and pride aside; it’s the only way.

PETA specifically targeted some of the most popular breeds of man’s best friend — bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, Dachshunds and the Chinese Shar-Pei. Plaintiffs asked Manhattan Supreme Court to stop the AKC from backing these standards that alleged “cause deformities, great suffering and premature death” to these animals. No one wants to think about getting old or sick, but as responsible dog owners, we must think about what would happen to our dogs if we became incapacitated or died. Everyone should have a written plan for the care for their dogs in the event of an accident, illness, or death. Share this plan with the significant people in your life! Every day we hear about dogs that end up homeless or confiscated because the owner couldn’t care for them. Do not assume that family members will be willing or able to take on the responsibility of caring for your beloved pets!
