The Black Russian Terrier was developed by the military Red Star kennel in Russia in the twentieth century, starting before and continuing after World War II. The goal was a breed that would be used by the military and national security. It had to be highly trainable, reliable, stable, courageous, useful for different purposes, and able to endure the harsh Russian weather.
