The Coton de Tulear is one of the Bichon family of dogs, which includes the Bichon Frise, Maltese, Bolognese, Havanese, Löwchen, and Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka. While the family originated around the Mediterranean, it traveled on sailing ships over the centuries to other lands.
