Kaz Hosaka – Like No Other

F Kaz Hosaka

Westminster 2024 stood out as the rare occasion where everyone agreed about the winner. That included exhibitors, judges, handlers and, most of all, the millions of casual fans that still tune in every year simply because they love dogs.

All I Want For Christmas

F All I Want for Christmas

John Mandeville and I were AKC Vice Presidents at the same time in the 1990s. John was an extremely bright and bold thinker who saw the sport through a wide apolitical lens. When John left, he wrote a column called Inside Out, a clever nod to the perspective of seeing the sport from both sides.

Eleanor-Rotman-1991-500x567

“There are so many wonderful memories of Ellie. In all the years of showing to her I do not remember the wins or loses, just the fun of showing to her. She had a way of making everyone who entered her ring that they were at a Garden Party! She made the novice feel they were on a par with the old pros. She would not allow anybody not to enjoy the time in her ring. Even the spectators outside her ring were drawn into party mode. She had a way of making a starting novice feel they were an important part of the show.”

Too Many Shows, Not Enough Entries

TooManyShows

We hear the refrain often: “too many dog shows and too few entries.” It’s like the quote (incorrectly) attributed to Mark Twain: “everyone complains about the weather but nobody does anything about it.” We lament about it, we complain about it, yet nothing changes. I don’t have the answer. I have a concept – an undercooked, ambitious concept – that will raise hopes or hackles depending on your point of view. My point is not to convince anyone of anything. It’s to start a conversation about actually doing something to address the current imbalance.
