HSVMA is playing hardball when it comes to recruitment. Growing numbers of vet school graduates may become aligned with this philosophy even though it directly conflicts with their professional imperatives – go figure. But from now on, I intend to get a clear read on this issue before I lay my money down for any professional vet opinion. I’m also sharing this frightening story with puppy buyers when they ask my advice on choosing a vet.

Tell Me Again, Why Are We Doing This?

Albert Einstein is credited with having said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Whether Einstein actually made this statement or, as some have suggested, it came from Benjamin Franklin or neither of these renowned gentlemen ever said any such thing, it sounds a lot like something that easily could have come from the mouth of frustrated dog owners trying to finish a title on their pooch.

One would expect that the number of puppies entered that day would double but, from my observations, this is never the case. Also, consider the same club in the middle of the circuit that decides to lower their entry fee by one dollar. Again, my observations show the increase in entries is negligible and, in fact, the club may be throwing away over $1,000 dollars, or more, depending upon the size of the entry.

There have been cultural changes and the manner of preparation has undergone alteration. A compromising of that which is substantive is frequently evident. Preparedness clearly differs a great deal and hence the resulting level of competence. Learning curves do, of course, vary considerably and the ability to effectively and intelligently apply acquired knowledge obviously differs among individuals.
