The news and social media channels will be flooded for days with news about the tragedy at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon. I read some posts that people had crossed the finish line five minutes before the first explosion while others alerted family and friends they were no where near the marathon route. Ultimately this made me appreciate our dog show community.

Along came UH UGA HRCH MHR Southern Standards Red Creole, MH, WCX, known affectionately as “Cooper.” He was headed for a life in the show ring with Lexie as she pursued Junior Showmanship, but a top groomer and handler took a look at the young dog and pronounced him not quite show quality. So the energetic pup went to boot camp with Rich and surprised everyone when he found his true calling as a hunting dog.

On February 10, 2013, the American Kennel Club disseminated the “Get the Facts” email alert in response to a story by the New York Times titled, “Safety Concerns Stoke Criticism of Kennel Club” published February 9, 2013. This story was run just before the televising of the 137th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and many will agree with my supposition that this story did not happen by chance but rather by design. Perhaps it is another example of opportunistic journalism leading up to the most publicized presentation of our passionate pursuit, the hobby or, in some cases, business of purebred dogs in our country.
