I believe the vast majority of highly successful breeders would agree that the foundation of a breeding program is a good brood matron, and that the right bitch will be the single most important purchase that, over time, will dictate the success or failure of a breeding program. Why is this? The answer is simple. A bitch may only produce four to six litters, eight in a very busy lifetime. Compare this to the stud dog’s ability to sire two to four times that in a year. Her influence on her breed is softer and takes significantly longer to evaluate than that of the stud. It is also true that she will likely never achieve the fame and glory of a dog that can be used at stud while simultaneously carrying on with a brilliant show career.

Okay. I admit it. I was doing just a little bit of online shopping. Shocking! Honestly, it was not for anything at all exciting. What I was searching for was a remedy to help me get some relief from the runny nose, post nasal drip, and clogged ears which have plagued me for months. To add further misery, my watery eyes started to fill to the brim sending an endless stream of tears running down my face. Like so many of us in the Northeast, our summer weather has wreaked havoc with my sinuses. I have traded soft tissues for half-size paper towels. Unfortunately, they have become my new best friends. We go everywhere together. Nothing about the current situation is glamorous or pleasant, quite the opposite.

Many breeds have an epigram that defines them. That short, distinctive line or quote that instantly gives you a mental picture of the breed’s essence. That little something maybe a breeder, judge, or exhibitor mentioned or a sentence from the breed standard.

Teeth. The judge has got to see them, so the handler needs to know how to show them. And often, the dreaded dental exam is where inexperienced and/or lazy handlers show off their lack of attention to training. Sure, it’s more fun to train the gaiting – the dog loves that part best – but in order to present your dog properly, you’ve got to get great at showing the mouth.

Charisma! That’s an often-used word in top show dog circles today. If a champion show dog has this indefinable essence, its chances of making it to the heights of the show world are greatly increased. As glamorous as dog showing has become, it’s easy to understand why modern fanciers might believe that they invented the word charisma but, of course, they would be wrong. If we could travel back in time some eighty-odd years ago to the 1930s dog show scene, we’d hear the word being used liberally and with enthusiasm–when discussing a big red setter named Milson O’Boy. In his blood O’Boy carried forward the age-old flame of breeders’ passion for elegant red setters and through him that flaming red torch burns brightly to this day.

We’re all familiar with the risks and complications that inevitably occur when a breed is commandeered by celebrity endorsements. It’s treacherous territory–end of story. (Of course not.) That gigantic, multifaceted danger zone is just one side of the deal. Because, once in a while that little shove into the limelight literally becomes a breed’s lifeline.
