No, it’s not a small Doberman. Owners of German Pinschers must tire of the reference. The German Pinscher is one of the breeds behind both the Doberman Pinscher and Miniature Pinscher and other “pinscher” breeds. The breed was developed in southern Germany and originally had one of two different coats–smooth coats and wire coats. The wire-haired dogs were called “Schnauzers” and became the separate Standard Schnauzer breed.

Tonight, the breed winners from the Sporting, Working and Terrier groups compete for one of the most coveted titles in dogdom–Westminster Group Winner.

Two days into Westminster 2022 and the reviews are mixed. Monday’s glorious weather definitely offset some of the challenges posed by this site–especially the parking. The Lyndhurst Estate is a justifiably celebrated historic site, with much to offer in terms of history and scenic vistas. But it was never designed to accommodate heavy traffic and big rigs. Those lush lawns and gardens are built on a maze of sloping hills, accessible via a network of narrow, dirt roads. It’s ideal if you want to stroll around the grounds and admire the views. Not quite so charming if you’re hauling dogs and equipment.

Regular followers of mine will be well aware of the numerous house moves we have undertaken over the past few years and, as anyone with dogs will know (we currently have a pack of four), house moves and renting can be extremely stressful!

By tradition, where are the furry Westmister Kennel Club Best in Show winners treated to a meal in New York?

I often ask myself, what is the motivation that drives us forward? It cannot possibly be fortune, because for every person who manages to eke out a profit on a litter there must be a hundred who lose money and realistically expect to do so. They are not in the game for profit, but for pleasure and the passion of it.

Back in 1962 Dorothy and Diane Poranski were in there for Alva Rosenberg’s late Monday night Smooth Dachshund judging. Well, Dorothy is gone but today Diane was there. She’s been at it for all those 60 years, and this year she hit the target, finally winning a Westminster BOV with her Smooth. Yeah, everybody cried. And whether or not you agreed with the judge today, that win exemplifies the kind of dedication and perseverance responsible for every dog on display this week in Tarrytown.

Did you guess the identity of the young dog show handler and Judge in our last #ThrowbackThursday photo?
