I often ask myself, what is the motivation that drives us forward? It cannot possibly be fortune, because for every person who manages to eke out a profit on a litter there must be a hundred who lose money and realistically expect to do so. They are not in the game for profit, but for pleasure and the passion of it.
Back in 1962 Dorothy and Diane Poranski were in there for Alva Rosenberg’s late Monday night Smooth Dachshund judging. Well, Dorothy is gone but today Diane was there. She’s been at it for all those 60 years, and this year she hit the target, finally winning a Westminster BOV with her Smooth. Yeah, everybody cried. And whether or not you agreed with the judge today, that win exemplifies the kind of dedication and perseverance responsible for every dog on display this week in Tarrytown.

We had an unusual situation here recently, if that’s how you would describe a typical show. More precisely, several specialty shows drifted into town, unmoored from their traditional Westminster ballast. Confusing for sure, but that’s been an ongoing theme since the arrival of COVID.
