When we hear about the canine flu striking dogs at shows we often compartmentalize: those shows were in another state, those dogs were from other breeds. So when reports came of an outbreak of canine flu that seemed to center around the Golden Retriever National in Oregon in September, a lot of people from other breeds and other places ignored it. I recently returned from St. John’s, Newfoundland. The most eastern point in North America; it’s as close to Shannon, Ireland, as it is to St. Louis, Missouri. Newfoundland is an island made of rock and great people. So is Manhattan, NYC, but Newfoundland is a much different rock. And of course, there are many more people and dogs in Manhattan. We don’t get to see the dogs from Newfoundland often because of its location and the logistics of getting dogs to shows elsewhere.

The Australian Terrier was initially developed in Tasmania before spreading to other parts of Australia to combat and control rodents including mice, rats, and snakes. It was developed by settlers using dogs they brought from the British Isles, including the Dandie Dinmont, Scotch Terrier (not the current Scottish Terrier), short-coated Skye, Norwich, Cairn, and Yorkshire Terriers.
