It was just a quick comment. There were three of us on the phone call; the extended conversation (long drives elicit deep dives) had evolved into sharing ideas from judge, handler, and trainer perspectives about some of the trends seen in our breed. In particular, we were discussing traits in the ring (and also in the field) that had strayed from the breed’s origins and purpose and we wondered why some had moved so far in that direction. After a long pause Kelly delivered the mic drop comment: it happens “when glory becomes inviting”.

In 1950, the late, great American songwriter, Johnny Mercer, wrote the English lyrics for a hit titled “Autumn Leaves.” While the song lyrics mourn a lost love, the first few words of the song are also a siren call to all hunting dog owners that the seasons for which they have trained all spring and summer has arrived. When the autumn leaves of red and gold start to fall, it’s time to start doing what the dogs were meant to do–go hunting.
An established brand name speaks for itself. Nabisco, Gillette, Ivory, the reasons are pretty clear. Soap, cookies, razors–a dime a dozen. But if you want the really good stuff, you automatically seek that brand name reassurance. For instance, a recent marketing survey revealed that companies owning the leading brand in 19 of 22 broad categories have held their top ranking position for a century.
