A Celebrated Writer, Breeder, Artist, and Friend to the Purebred Dog Community
The Canine Chronicle is deeply saddened by the passing of Amy Fernandez, a longtime contributor whose extraordinary knowledge, distinctive voice, and unwavering dedication to purebred dogs made her one of the most respected writers in the sport.
A native New Yorker who made her home in Queens, Amy devoted much of her life to the dogs, people, and history that shaped the world of purebred dogs. She possessed a remarkable ability to bring history to life, uncover forgotten stories, and share her knowledge with readers in a way that was both entertaining and enlightening.
Amy’s contributions to the sport extended far beyond the written word. Beginning in 1981, she bred and exhibited Chinese Cresteds under her renowned Razzmatazz kennel name, producing numerous champions and earning international recognition. She was also instrumental in the development and recognition of the Xoloitzcuintli, serving as a past president of the Xoloitzcuintli Club of America and helping guide the breed toward American Kennel Club recognition.
An accomplished author, Amy began her professional writing career in 1990. Over the decades, her work appeared in numerous respected publications, including the AKC Gazette, The Canine Chronicle and others. She authored numerous books on dogs and earned prestigious honors from the Dog Writers Association of America, an organization she also served as president.
Amy’s talents were not limited to writing and breeding. She was also an award-winning canine artist whose work was exhibited in prestigious venues, including the AKC Museum of the Dog. Her artistic eye, historical perspective, and profound understanding of purebred dogs were evident in everything she created.
For readers of The Canine Chronicle, Amy was a familiar and treasured voice. Her articles reflected an extraordinary depth of research, an appreciation for the traditions of the sport, and a genuine passion for preserving its history. She understood that behind every great dog, every breed, and every milestone was a story worth telling.
Her passing leaves a tremendous void in the purebred dog community and in the pages of The Canine Chronicle. Her contributions to canine literature, breed preservation, and the history of our sport will continue to educate and inspire future generations.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Amy’s friends, family, and the countless people whose lives she touched throughout her remarkable career.
Amy Fernandez will be remembered not only for the stories she told, but for the history she preserved, the knowledge she shared, and the lasting legacy she leaves behind.
