There are few things in our sport that are more contentious than the AKC judging approval process for conformation judges. It’s been changing since the beginning of dog shows to keep up with shifts in our sport and the societal norms in which we live. In each iteration there seems to be a quest for fairness that involves more tests and point systems, and less human input and flexibility. We live in a world where everyone expects a participation trophy–a world that assumes that fairness is always fair. Has hyper-focusing on fairness erased too much flexibility, too much human input in the judging approval process?

Sportsmanship. That elusive quality that is inherent in some fortunate individuals and sadly lacking in many others. There is more to being a good sport than congratulating a competitor after they’ve beaten you. No, being a good competitor and practicing good sportsmanship goes much, much deeper than that.

I admit—it’s harder than I thought it would ever be. Physically, moving into your new home is exhausting. First, the boxes need to be placed in the correct room. If they are in the wrong place, they need to be moved again. Hopefully, each box has a label with its contents and final location. Even so, the odds are likely that some things will never fit in the space as expected. Suddenly, boxes pile up in the garage or a large room until a place is found for them. From my recent experience—honestly—boxes still remain in the garage.
