The Big E – Erosion

F The Big E Erosion

Recently, I went to a meeting for my specialty breed club at a long-established, local all-breed show. The show is held at a very comfortable air-conditioned place for our club members to show dogs and have our meeting during the summer. The club gets a major entry from us. We shop the vendors, have a bite to eat, and enjoy each other’s company. Even the parking exceeds expectations with plenty of nearby spaces in the shade. The venue is clean, bright, and has restrooms. All this seems absolutely perfect.

Did You Know: There Is A Lot To Know?

F Did You Know

I bet you didn’t know that there are reams of booklets, links, and printed pages that cover every conceivable detail about all things AKC. If you’re a new owner of an AKC-registered dog, I know you’re so proud that you have “Papers” on “Fido.” I hope you have figured out that a pedigree listing their heritage is not the “papers” you really want and need. I’ll take a leap of faith and assume the breeder you bought your dog from either sat with you and had you sign the “blue slip” from the litter registration or at least provided you with it to send in on your own; and it included their signature as “breeder(s) of record”. In this techie era, one can do it online as well…but I do know that verifiable signatures are still required, and you have to choose a name for your new pup.

AKC Rules & Conflict Of Interest: 20 Questions

F AKC 20 Questions

Exhibitors are talented at claiming conflicts of interests when it involves their competition, and denying any when it involves themselves. But what do the rules have to say about it? Technically, the Rules, Policies, and Guidelines for Conformation Dog Show Judges states, “A conflict of interest exists when a judge is influenced by any relationship or factor other than the merit of the dogs.” We all know that’s probably a bit broad and unenforceable, but some are well-defined and very enforceable. But not all are understood, especially by exhibitors. How well do you know your rules when it comes to conflicts of interest?

NEWS

The four-plus day show cluster has become the staple of today’s dog show scene in the United States. A quick glance at our events calendar at www.caninechronicle.com shows how clusters of shows held in one location has become a normal, weekly occurrence in most regions. Heck, we even have a button titled “Cluster View” on our events calendar that groups the shows by cluster each weekend.

Meet The Miscellaneous And FSS Working Breeds

F Miscellaneous & FSS

The Working group currently includes 31 breeds. Two more future Working breeds–the Danish-Swedish Farmdog and the Kai Ken–are currently in the Miscellaneous Class, and will probably join the Working group within a few years, eventually bringing it to 33 breeds. The Foundation Stock Service breeds include 19 more that may or may not eventually join the Working group. If that were to ever happen, the Working group would (once again) be amongst AKC’s largest, with 52 (!) breeds (assuming all succeeded in becoming bonafide breeds, and no more FSS breeds joined). And once again the call to split the groups would become more vocal.
