A few months ago, I was asked to speak at a conference held jointly by the Canadian Kennel Club and the Canadian Dog Show Judges Association. The topic was “Ethics in Dog Show Judging”. The first thing I did was ask myself if it was ethical to talk about ethics without having an advanced degree in ethics. Was it in my scope of competence? I passed a few entry-level college courses in ethics many years ago, but that clearly does not make me an expert.

While enjoying dinner with some doggie friends recently, the topic of judging found its way into our conversation. (surprise, surprise!) However, this wasn’t the typical discussion about the merits, or lack thereof, of today’s judges. This conversation was about the reasons people choose to judge dogs. We wondered aloud why people want to become judges and why some attempt to gain approval for more breeds as soon as possible.

The English Toy Spaniel is thought to have originated from China and/or Japan or perhaps bred down from the Spaniels from Spain. They have been well-documented for centuries, and included in many paintings. They were favorites of England’s Charles I and Charles II, and were especially popular during the reign of the latter. Charles II lent his name to the breed which is called the King Charles Spaniel in places other than the United States and Canada.

Many breeds and their clubs are now beginning to feel the effects of decline and most can point to at least one or more problems that need to be solved. What makes their problems complicated is the amount of effort needed and their ability to find agreement on what actions to take. This dilemma becomes more apparent with the recent announcement by the American Kennel Club (AKC) Purebred Preservation Bank Committee (PPB ) (6), that nine breeds will become extinct in the AKC stud book.
