There are few things in our sport that are more contentious than the AKC judging approval process for conformation judges. It’s been changing since the beginning of dog shows to keep up with shifts in our sport and the societal norms in which we live. In each iteration there seems to be a quest for fairness that involves more tests and point systems, and less human input and flexibility. From my recent experience—honestly—boxes still remain in the garage.

Have you ever been caught off guard by the judge saying something out of the normal, in-ring instruction? Most exhibitors have at one time or another, and then later wondered if they said the right thing or should have been more confrontational or less confrontational–or just shut up completely.

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier was named after a character in the book Guy Mannering written by Sir Walter Scott. The breed was first identified in the early 1700s, developed from rough coated terriers around the borders of England and Scotland. Initially they were named based on their coat colors–Mustard and Pepper. They were famed for their hunting prowess, initially going after otters and badgers.
