Each winter in the north, the night skies are bright with Orion, the constellation shaped like a hunter with a bow and arrow. A good hunter needs a good dog so Canis Major, the constellation in the shape of a dog, dutifully hangs out with Orion. Canis Major takes the lead from Orion in summer. The big star in Canis Major is Sirius, also known as “The Dog Star.” It’s the brightest star in all of the night skies, as it should be.*

Remember the tongue twister that began with, “How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?” Maybe we need a couple of variations on that old saw such as, “How many times can a judge judge shows if a judge could judge each day?” Or “How many shows can a show dog show at if shows are held numerous times throughout the day?” I know, not nearly as catchy, but you get the drift.

The goal was a breed that would be used by the military and national security. I dropped by the Edison, New Jersey shows a couple months ago, and I am delighted to say these clubs are going strong. New Brunswick hosted back-to-back shows on Friday and Saturday, March 21-22nd, and the Bronx Kennel Club held their 102nd show on Sunday, March 23rd. A good part of the success is due to their prime location at the Raritan Convention Center. It’s costly but the tradeoff is lots of space and a relatively convenient commute from all directions.
