The expression “judging on the day” is an essential phrase that judges should recite to themselves each time they step into the ring. Like many phrases, however, we hear it so often that we rarely stop to think about what it means; it’s interpretations and consequences.

The 2022 event will showcase the top canine athletes and will also include popular attractions such as the Best Bred-by-Exhibitor competition, the AKC National Owner-Handled Series Finals, and the AKC Royal Canin National All-Breed Puppy and Junior Stakes. The show will once again take place alongside the AKC Agility Invitational and the Obedience Classic, with junior events in Conformation, Agility, Obedience and Rally.
You’ve seen them–those dog/handler combos that go around the ring with perfect elegance, in perfect accord, and with no tension on the lead. The dog stays in the optimal position as they move confidently around the ring, and you wonder how on earth you and your dog could make that picture.
When we start as new, untested judges, I think we all have our heads in the clouds! We think, “I know I can do this, after all, I showed/bred good dogs, and did my share of winning! What’s the problem? I did a little bit of stewarding, went to Nationals, mentored under some good people, I’m ready!”

If the pandemic taught us anything, it is that having more than one source of income is desirable—if not vital, for survival. Will Alexander, of Milton, Ontario understands this well. He’s a successful businessman with several dog-related endeavors, as well as a handler who has reached one of the pinnacles of the sport—Best In Show at Westminster. “My life revolves around dogs,” he says. “So everything I’ve done—seminars, classes, transport services, writing, producing grooming products, and handling—involves them as well.”
