The Golden Retriever is and has been one of the most popular breeds in the United States for years. Originating in Scotland in the second half of the nineteenth century on the estate of Lord Tweedmouth, the Golden was developed as and is a gundog used in hunting birds. But the breed is physically and temperamentally willing to successfully work as a service dog, search and rescue dog, performance competitor in many venues, and perhaps most of all as a beloved family member.
The great thing about purebreds is their infinite variety. This has nothing to do with capricious whims. It’s all about fine-tuning a genetic formula for that ultimate combination of utility and beauty. It’s a tall order, but it’s led to the creation of over 400 breeds. Some, like Cockers and Labs have earned broad, lasting appeal. They will always have fans. Then there’s the Clumber. Also a Sporting dog and a spaniel, it is unlikely that we will ever witness the Clumber scaling the heights of top ten popularity.

Whenever I have free time at shows, I watch juniors. I love watching the new talent and how they interact with their dogs and peers. I love seeing their days made by pink ribbons and kind words. As I watch, however, I have noticed a shift from fundamentals to flash. While some are showing true to their breed standard, others are showing as “flashy” as possible–and being rewarded in junior showmanship.
Many in our sport complain about how dog shows today don’t compare to days gone by. I am grateful. I feel that with evolution comes change and with change comes a new perspective. Not all change is positive nor welcome, but then we have amazing advances and growth driven by necessity. Nothing stays the same, so to lament the loss of the past only paralyzes us and stifles our ability to evolve. The time for complaints has passed and the time for solutions is upon us.
