Ah,the inner workings of a judge’s brain – when you’re in the ring, wouldn’t it be nice to know what the judge was thinking? It’s with that premise that a recent survey went out, asking judges to weigh in on newbie exhibitors. Guess what – even those of us who have been around a long time can learn from these survey responses!

AKC recognizes the three Belgian herding dogs – Sheepdog, Tervuren, and Malinois – as three separate breeds. For AKC, the Belgian Laekenois is in Miscellaneous. FCI countries categorize the four breeds as varieties of one Belgian Sheepdog breed, including the Laekenois variety. In FCI countries, the AKC Belgian Sheepdog variety is known as Groenendael.
This year, the Westminster show and Crufts were disrupted by animal rights activists. The recently held Coronado Kennel Club dog show in Albuquerque, New Mexico was delayed due to an active shooter incident and thankfully no one was injured. And, this past weekend at the Woofstock shows in Vallejo, California, at least three two-person teams set themselves to the task of releasing dogs from their kennels.
Dogs in paintings run, play, follow the prey, take care of their puppies and look at us. Such paintings are indispensable for unraveling the history of dogs.

A few weeks ago, my Chesapeake Bay Retriever Bo spent throat and a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach, he ran to Bo’s the night with Craig Klein, his professional trainer, at his kennel after a hunt test. When I arrived to pick him up the following morning, Craig went to get him. In the same kennel section, he had five just weaned Chesapeake puppies and a Labrador pup.
