If there is one country I never tire of visiting, it is Finland – especially when the journey’s end involves her dog shows and related canine events. Friends who know my obsession with all things Finnish politely ask after my trips, and groan quietly through clenched teeth at my long-winded answers.

Show committees typically dread the work and planning for their upcoming events. The general attitude is hope for the best, but prepare for the worst – because countless glitches inevitably complicate the process. According to some show committees, an unexpected issue has become one of their biggest challenges.

From this skillful use of words are parallels easily drawn to the sport of purebred dog competition. Corresponding in a reminiscent way of olden days when this sport was an uncommon privilege. In a measure, the sport once was a benefit enjoyed by certain persons beyond the advantages of most.

In my mediation practice I find that many of my clients are eager to immediately speak up, just not to the people who most need to hear what they have to say. They want to avoid direct confrontation yet fuel its fire by speaking to others outside the situation who support their point of view.

I wonder just how many times I or my hunting dog-owning pals have uttered that phrase, always as a prelude to recounting some action that seemed perfectly good, sane and sensible at the time but ultimately resulted in total disaster.
