The 2020 Iditarod Winner’s Long, Strange Trip

After lengthy, unsuccessful negotiations to line up flight arrangements for his return to Norway, it finally happened in grand style last June. Actually, that trip probably rivaled the thrill of winning the Iditarod. By then, everybody in Alaska knew about this Norwegian guy stranded with 16 dogs.

The first half of the Brooksville cluster closed last week, and they have an entry that exceeds 3,000 dogs! I have not seen Brooksville entries like that in decades. This, in my opinion, is great news for our sport. Fewer shows is not always bad news my friends!

As many sporting, hound, terrier and even a few Poodle owners decide they owe it to their dogs to give them the opportunity to do what the breeds were intended to do, hunt, the odds increase that someone in their circle of friends and acquaintances will regard the dog owners as rating somewhere below child molesters and axe murders. And, the odds are also good that the dog owners will find themselves in hostile conversations with anti-hunters and quite possibly awkward ones with non-hunters. So, you need to have some idea of how to deal with these folks.

The Art of the Critique – A Bold New Endeavor

Today we find ourselves in a catch 22 situation. AKC guidelines say we judges should not speak to exhibitors except for the usual pleasantries – good day, yes, it is a hot one, etc…This makes it kind of difficult to sneak messages under the table to inform the exhibitor of our honest opinion of their stock. I believe we need to inform the exhibitors better, or we will continue to see a decline in show entries and breeding stock.

The station manager, hearing suspicious sounds emanating from the supposedly vacant restroom, summoned the police to report a burglary in progress. Well, they barged in, weapons drawn, to find Butch zonked out and snoring away as only a Saint can, completely oblivious to the mayhem.
