The American Kennel Club recently published a press release (http://caninechronicle.com/breaking-news/akc-social-media-complaints/) regarding the handling of Social Media Complaints. The press release caused some immediate assumptions by keyboard warriors who were up in arms about what that they felt was AKC’s attempt to censor what some post online. After reading the press release and comments, I reached out to AKC executives for confirmation of my interpretation of the release which did not align with what some others had concluded. My understanding was confirmed. The recent press release was not the announcement of a new social media policy. The purpose of the communication was to inform the fancy that the Events Committees would no longer entertain complaints based on comments made in public forums. I was directed to a reply to a Facebook post on this subject authored by Tim Thomas, Vice President, Judging Operations, which included in part:

One of the things at the top of my bucket list is to attend a dog show at the beautiful World Equestrian Center (WEC) in Ocala, Florida. I keep hearing such amazing things about the facility, the grounds, and everything associated with it! We need to be protective of lovely venues like this, my friends. After last weekend’s shows there were set-ups and areas left in less than clean conditions. We all need to continue to work hard to leave our venues in better shape than we found them.

A big thank you and congratulations to the Golden Retriever Club of America for their response to a disgruntled “doodle” breeder who took exception to their position on crossbreeding golden retrievers and poodles. Hopefully, the education provided will help educate the individual who believed two years of research was sufficient to start a “cross” breeding program! One can only hope… I have shared the doodle breeder’s letter and GRCA’s response on my Facebook page. It’s priceless!

Two days into Westminster 2022 and the reviews are mixed. Monday’s glorious weather definitely offset some of the challenges posed by this site–especially the parking. The Lyndhurst Estate is a justifiably celebrated historic site, with much to offer in terms of history and scenic vistas. But it was never designed to accommodate heavy traffic and big rigs. Those lush lawns and gardens are built on a maze of sloping hills, accessible via a network of narrow, dirt roads. It’s ideal if you want to stroll around the grounds and admire the views. Not quite so charming if you’re hauling dogs and equipment.

What a pleasure to be writing this week’s Table Talk from the incredible Lyndhurst Mansion, home of the 146thWestminster Kennel Club dog show. So far, we have been blessed with incredible weather. While not having spectators last year provided for very spacious show grounds, the addition of spectators this year really brings back the feeling of excitement that we are accustomed to at one of the greatest shows on earth. Space under the tent is a bit more “compact” than last year. The venue, in my opinion, is a fabulous alternative to the Piers and Madison Square Garden. The Westminster Kennel Club has done a fabulous job transforming the venue into a fantastic home for the show. The group tent, once again, is climate-controlled with a carpeted floor. Once inside, you would not know you are in a temporary structure! For the first time this year, FOX Deportes is doing a simulcast of the group and Best In Show judging. This is a terrific outreach opportunity to the Latin community as they will be able to watch the broadcast in their native language. Congratulations to the Westminster Kennel Club for a phenomenal job of putting a terrific show together!

Back in 1962 Dorothy and Diane Poranski were in there for Alva Rosenberg’s late Monday night Smooth Dachshund judging. Well, Dorothy is gone but today Diane was there. She’s been at it for all those 60 years, and this year she hit the target, finally winning a Westminster BOV with her Smooth. Yeah, everybody cried. And whether or not you agreed with the judge today, that win exemplifies the kind of dedication and perseverance responsible for every dog on display this week in Tarrytown.
