The function of the seven cervical vertebrae in a dog is to support the head and protect the spinal cord. It is constructed in a gentle “S” curve allowing the head to be arched upwards and backwards, so the head can be held facing the direction of movement, and also allowing forward flexion to reach the ground for sniffing and eating.

Albert Einstein is credited with having said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Whether Einstein actually made this statement or, as some have suggested, it came from Benjamin Franklin or neither of these renowned gentlemen ever said any such thing, it sounds a lot like something that easily could have come from the mouth of frustrated dog owners trying to finish a title on their pooch.

One would expect that the number of puppies entered that day would double but, from my observations, this is never the case. Also, consider the same club in the middle of the circuit that decides to lower their entry fee by one dollar. Again, my observations show the increase in entries is negligible and, in fact, the club may be throwing away over $1,000 dollars, or more, depending upon the size of the entry.

It is hard to imagine that AKC can’t find another venue at a different time of year so as to not conflict with ADSJ’s Institute, the latter of which is held in such high esteem by so many of us for offering what we feel to be an incredible “bang for the buck.”

“The Garden is the world’s most famous sporting arena and Westminster qualifies as the only event that has been held in all four versions of MSG. The circus and the National Horse Show departed long ago. There just wasn’t room for elephants, camels, and horses.” Many Westminster veterans might argue that there wasn’t much room for a dog show either.

I believe AKC’s intent was to give exhibitors another chance for recognition. As we know, they are still “fine tuning” the manner in which RBIS is awarded: currently two dogs are pulled out and BIS is awarded first and RBIS after. When the award began in July, BIS was awarded and RBIS was awarded from the remaining line-up.

Buses for spectators only will commence at 11 a.m. at the three hotels and run on the half hour until 2:30 p.m. At 3 p.m., buses for the Best of Breed winners, their people and equipment will begin to leave the Piers and go to Madison Square Garden only. Exhibitors with BOB winners have priority on these buses and additional passengers are subject to space availability. The last bus will leave at 5:30 p.m. as benching at MSG is required at 6 p.m.
