The dog world was shocked by the sudden, unexpected passing of Joe Sanchez. Joe was a great breeder of Mastiffs and supporter of purebred dogs. He will be missed by all.

Joe’s service is this Thursday, March 9, at 12 noon at Forest Lawn, Covina Hills, 21300 Via Verde Drive, Covina, CA 91724. The family requests that anyone wishing to honor Mr. Sanchez make a donation to the Canine Health Foundation in his honor in lieu of flowers.

The dog world was stunned by the sudden passing of longtime Mastiff breeder/exhibitor and purebred dog fancier Joe Sanchez last night. Nearly everyone in the sport knows the Sanchez family, and Joe was beloved by everyone who met him. Joe and his wife, Carla, started breeding Mastiffs under the Southport prefix in 1982. The produced numerous #1 Mastiffs, Best in Show, and National Specialty winners including many of the top winning Mastiffs in the history of the breed.

The Beverly Hills Kennel Club shows are being held this coming weekend at the Pomona Fairgrounds. As most of you know, this show will air on television Easter Sunday.

Today marks the first day of the North Florida Classic Cluster cluster in Tallahassee, FL. Day one includes two shows in one day. I’d love to hear from folks about how they feel about the two-shows-in-one-day concept. It would be interesting to hear the exhibitor’s perspective and their opinion of the impact on dogs. I took a quick look at the show schedule and felt badly for the professional handlers. I continue to be hesitant about this concept, especially for young dogs. I am not sure the “more show the better” concept is the right approach. It certainly didn’t work for Starbucks. Here’s hoping all goes smoothly.

Another change exhibitors experienced this year was the ring surface. New carpet was used in the breed rings at the Pier and in the group ring at the Garden. Unfortunately, the new carpet gave many dogs and humans some trouble. Many exhibitors had bloody knees and several dogs experienced raw pads which resulted in an inability for them to move at their best.

Hats off to Harry Miller and his team who worked endless hours and stood in the rain to manage the shuttle service to and from the Pier at Westminster. This team also managed the traffic outside the venue. One of Harry’s shuttle drivers walked off the job the first day because he didn’t like dogs… sadly, the replacement didn’t have strong driving skills and caused a bit of a wreck at 8th and 34th Streets.
Despite the excitement, Harry managed to keep the buses running and get everyone to their destination safely and in a timely manner…

By Amy Fernandez “I’m getting too old for this” is a common refrain this week. Then again, “you’re as old as you feel.” And one old girl is definitely proving that point this weekend. A little Smooth Coat Chihuahua, GCh. Ayrwen Star Kissed Delight, better known as Dee Dee, made the last flight out of […]

By Amy Fernandez The biggest star to emerge from the weekend so far is Ch. Pequest Pickwick. Since rolling into town he won Progressive on Friday, the Pekingese Club of New Jersey specialty on Saturday, and the Pekingese Association of New York specialty on Sunday. Naturally, curiosity is running high. Fans flock around for a […]
