Due to the negative impact on both clusters, the show committees were able to change the show calendar so the shows in Rosemont were held the weekend prior to the shows in Cleveland. Then the Orlando cluster and the AKC National Championship were added to the mix.

The Puppy stakes at the AKC Championship have had an overwhelming response from the fancy. There are over 1200 entries that required seven additional judges to be hired to judge the event.

I have been hearing more and more complaints from judges who are put up in hotels with no restaurant and no transportation, or are expected to navigate difficult travel from the airport to the hotel. While I recognize that clubs are trying to save money, I don’t think judges’ hospitality is the place to conserve funds.

Some exhibitors have been diagnosed with pneumonia. There is one confirmed case of Valley Fever, so if any of our readers in attendance at the Dane National have flu-like symptoms, I strongly encourage a visit to your doctor. The host hotel is very concerned and Jason is working closely with them to report all illnesses. Please contact Jason Hoke if you became ill and have a physician’s diagnosis.

I am hearing so many stories about our friends that have experienced great loss as a result of the Northern California wildfires. Randy Pompkin, the mobile vet who does hip and elbow exams at several of the California shows, lost his home… David and Jan Bruce, breeders of Cocker Spaniels and Shetland Sheepdogs and owners of David Bruce Winery (makers of outstanding Pinot and Chardonnay), have lost at least 5 acres of vineyards thus far.

ust when we thought the weather-related disasters were over, we have friends that are dealing with fire-related evacuation and damage in Northern California. As an avid wine snob, not only am I keeping tabs on my friends, but also on our favorite wineries! My thoughts are with those affected by these horrible fires. May you and your animals stay safe.
