Remembering Marion Hancock

For decades, Marion’s life was intertwined with German Wirehaired Pointers. Together with her longtime companion, the late Dr. Robert “Bob” Wickes, Marion became closely associated with Wirewick German Wirehaired Pointers, producing and supporting generations of dogs that left their mark both in the show ring and in performance competition.

Marion and Bob’s story together began, fittingly, through dogs. They met at a dog show in Tampa in 1984, beginning a partnership and friendship that would span more than three decades. Their shared devotion to German Wirehaired Pointers became an important part of their lives and ultimately contributed to a breeding legacy that continues today.

Among the dogs carrying that legacy is GCHG CH Wirewick Afterhours Feels Like A Regret, “Greta,” bred by Robert Wickes, Marion Hancock and Alexis Chism. Greta captured the 2025 German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America National Specialty and went on to earn Best in Show at the 2025 AKC National Owner-Handled Series Finals—an extraordinary accomplishment and a testament to the generations of dedication behind her.

But Marion’s contribution to the breed cannot be measured simply by championships, titles or wins.

Her legacy lives in the dogs she bred and loved, in the pedigrees that continue forward, and most importantly, in the friendships she formed throughout a lifetime devoted to German Wirehaired Pointers and the sport of dogs.

Those who knew Marion will remember a woman whose connection to her breed endured for decades. Through Wirewick, through the dogs carrying those bloodlines today, and through the many people whose lives crossed hers because of dogs, her influence will continue for generations.

The Canine Chronicle extends our deepest condolences to Marion’s family, friends and the entire German Wirehaired Pointer community.

Her presence will be deeply missed, but the legacy she leaves behind will remain an enduring part of the breed she loved.
