Table Talk · December 25, 2024
It’s hard to believe this is the last Table Talk column of 2024! It seems as if I was just wishing everyone a Happy New Year, 2024 and now… Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukkah and Happy New year 2025!
I sincerely hope that everyone is taking this break to recharge and spend quality time with family and friends. I wish everyone cherished ribbons, good times, and beautiful puppies in the year to come!
The December Secretary’s pages have been released and the handler that was videoed slapping her dog at the St. Clair Kennel Club in Michigan has been suspended of all AKC privileges for 90 days and given a $300 fine. The suspension is effective October 5, 2024.
For those that missed the Table Talk Live! interview with Tim Thomas, Vice President, Conformation for AKC, I encourage you to go to our Facebook page or Canine Chronicle TV and watch it. Tim reviews the disciplinary process and explains how it works.
As a reminder, the Secretary’s pages post not only judging applications but also applications from handlers wanting to join the AKC RHP program. This gives the fancy an opportunity to review those who are applying for either. If you have concerns about an applicant, you can bring them to the attention of the appropriate party. Those concerns can be directed to AKC Judging Operations.
During the Herding Group judging at Wednesday’s Brevard Kennel Club in Orlando, a Briard lunged at the Belgian Tervuren. I am told this is not the first time that the Briard has been involved in an incident like this, but I cannot confirm that claim. While some exhibitors assumed the Club did not address the situation because the Briard was exhibited the following day, this is not correct. It is good not to post assumptions on social media and allow the process to take its course.
Don’t forget to tune in to ABC on Sunday, December 29th at 2 PM Eastern time to watch the broadcast of the 2024 AKC National Championship. Most importantly, tell all your “non-dog” friends to watch as this is one of the few televised shows that give us the opportunity to educate the public about our sport!
The entries for the Kennel Club of Palm Springs and Specialty and Group Shows have closed. With All-Breed entries at nearly 2,800, we are assured deep quality and a great time! There are huge entries in several breeds including 80+ Boxers, almost 90 French Bulldogs and 80+ Rhodesian Ridgebacks. If you want to learn about one of our newer breeds, the Danish Swedish Farm Dogs will be holding their inaugural Specialty there. I am fortunate to be able to cover the largest, most beautiful dog show in Southern California once again! Keep your eyes open for my “roving” studio and join in the fun!
The 149th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show entries have closed, too. It is my sincere hope that those of you who entered “the lottery” had your entry accepted! Westminster’s President, Donald Sturz, was kind enough to sit down with me in Orlando and review the lottery process. He also gave us an update about WKC’s return to Manhattan. Be sure to check it out on our Facebook page or Canine Chronicle TV! You can find the Westminster press release on our website https://caninechronicle.com/breaking-news/over-2500-champion-dogs-from-all-50-states-to-compete-at-the-149th-annual-westminster-kennel-club-dog-show-february-8-10-11-in-new-york-city/. There is also an exhibitor familiarization video available on YouTube that describes how we will navigate the Javits Center. The video can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgKWerW_Upg. Be sure to check it out! This year’s largest entry is Dachshunds (52), followed by Poodles (44) and French Bulldogs (40). This year all breeds will be represented. I look forward to seeing everyone in New York!
