Table Talk · August 21, 2024

Heads up to all professional handlers!  In July 2024 The AKC Board of Directors voted to establish a policy to require all professional handlers and agents listed in dog show catalogs to successfully complete the Stewards of Children training from Darkness to Light once every three years, effective January 1, 2025. The program is available for $16 on the Darkness to Light website.

How will this be enforced, you ask? A new and unique agent number system will be created and maintained by the American Kennel Club. The new agent number should be used for events occurring on or after January 1, 2025 and will be accepted by all superintendents. AKC RHP and PHA Handler numbers will be retained as they are universally accepted.

AKC is asking that all necessary information–including proof of completion of the Stewards of Children program–be submitted to AKC Judging operations (judgecompliance@akc.org) no later than October 1, 2024 to ensure listing in catalogs beginning January 1, 2025.

AKC continues to take safety at our shows seriously and is doing their best to implement policies to this end. Responsibility still lies with parents and guardians to ensure the safety of the youngsters of our sport. Know where you are sending your children, and who you are sending them with!  You cannot ask too many questions or be too careful.

The Southern Handler’s Charity League (SHCL) continues to do their part in providing a positive experience for the next generation of our sport. In conjunction with the Austin Kennel Club, SHCL will be holding their first Juniors Jamboree at the Austin Kennel Club shows in Belton, TX September 20-22.  There will be an area designated just for Juniors and Peewees with a tent so they can hang out together. There will be mini seminars all weekend for the juniors. The emphasis of this event will be teaching things that will help the up-and-comers with showing, training, and caring for dogs. Handlers, vendors, breeders, and exhibitors will be teaching the seminars. With each seminar the children attend they will be given a ticket and there will be a drawing for prizes at the end of the event. Friday night there will be a fun social event, and breakfast and afternoon snacks will be served throughout the weekend. If you would like to help with this important event, or donate to goodie bags or prize drawings, please contact David Williams at PeidayCSP1@aol.com.

The Canine Chronicle is pleased to support The AKC Museum of the Dog that will be holding a Wine and Appetizer fundraiser at the Wine Country Circuit in Romulus, NY after Best In Show on Saturday, September 28th. If you would like to raise a glass to the Museum of the Dog–and the sport of purebred dogs–you can go to the Canine Chronicle Facebook page and search for the event post, then use the QR code to purchase your ticket! I am planning to attend, and I cannot wait to see everyone there!

Reserved grooming for Montgomery County Kennel Club and Hatboro has opened! Please go to the Site Control website at www.sitecontrolservices.com and reserve your spot before they are all gone.

Congratulations to Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association, for being honored for leadership, impact, and positive change, and being chosen as one of the most influential leaders in healthcare.  Nancy finds herself not on ONE list but TWO: Forbes 50 Over 50 AND the Non-Profit Times Power and Influence Top 50. Way to go, Nancy! We are so proud to have you as part of the dog fancy.  (https://caninechronicle.com/current-articles/american-heart-association-ceo-nancy-brown-honored-for-leadership-impact-positive-change/).

The transitional weather has wreaked a bit of havoc on many of our fellow fanciers. A lightning strike hit the home of Linda Clark and caused a fire. Thankfully, all dogs and humans were unharmed.

Flash flooding in Connecticut caused some stress for Tuni and Ernie Conti. Fortunately, all humans and canines are okay, but there is definitely a lot of clean-up on the horizon for them.  Best wishes for a quick and safe clean-up.

David and Kristyn Stout have collected their final belongings from storage in Florida and are headed home to Pennsylvania. Best wishes for the next chapter of your life, my friends!

Congratulations to love birds BJ Whitlow and Alaina Moulton on your engagement. BJ and Alaina were engaged during a lovely trip to Napa. Your future looks bright, my friends! enjoy!

Happy Anniversary to Michael Capton and Michelle Montes-Capton. Cheers to many more years of love and happiness ahead.

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include:  Janice Hayes, Tatum Bartlett, Antonio Vidmar, Megan Cloudman, Sam Mammano, Dana Cline, Bonnie Linnell-Clarke, David Johnson, David Miller, Patty Keenan and Bobby Fisher. Best wishes for another great trip around the sun!

Please remember this, my friends!  Wish people well. Their success will not limit yours!

I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming shows. If your travels bring you to the Wine Country at the end of September, please be sure to get your Museum of the Dog fundraiser tickets and stop by the Pro Plan booth and see me!

Be safe out there! Until next time…
