We are excited to share with you some of the AKC happenings and news this month. In this 11th edition of “To the Core” there is information about the newly established AKC Purebred Preservation Bank, AKC CHF’s 1000th scientific publication, best financial practices to protect your clubs and much more.

Last Call for AKC Meet the Breeds Chicago

AKC Meet the Breeds Chicago is just a couple of weeks away! It is a fun, family-friendly event to educate the public about purebred dogs, dog sports, and responsible dog ownership. We have limited space in Chicago and want to encourage you to ensure your breed is signed up and represented.

The AKC Meet the Breeds tour will stop in Chicago, IL (August 26th-27th), in conjunction with the International Kennel Club show, the Great American Dog Show. The following MTB event will be in Columbus, OH on October 14th, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, and sign ups are well underway. To receive more information about these events, please email meetthebreeds@akc.org and we will send you the forms. Please participate to help further our mission to spread knowledge to the public about our cherished breeds and responsible dog ownership. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

AKC Purebred Preservation Bank

We are proud to announce the creation of the AKC Purebred Preservation Bank, a 501 C3, not-for-profit genetic material repository primarily focused on frozen semen. AKCPPB’s mission is to ensure the viability of purebred dogs both now and in the future, particularly in low population breeds.

The mission of the AKC Purebred Preservation Bank (AKCPPB) is to ensure the viability of purebred dogs both now and in the future, particularly in low population breeds. While coordinating efforts with non-profit breed-specific clubs, the AKCPPB will educate breeders, clubs, and the public about the importance of safeguarding frozen semen and protecting purebred dog breeds for future decades. There is no cost to the owner/donor or Parent Club to donate genetic material.

We are very excited to educate breeders, clubs, and the public about the importance of safeguarding genetic material and protecting dog breeds for future decades through this new affiliate.

AKC Canine Health Foundation 1000th Scientific Publication

We are honored to congratulate AKC CHF on their 1000th scientific publication, featured in Frontiers in Pain Research, which presents groundbreaking research examining objective differences in pain sensitivity between specific dog breeds. The results of this study challenge commonly held beliefs about breed-specific pain sensitivity and carry important implications that may improve the recognition and treatment of pain in dogs.

Since its inception in 1995, CHF, in partnership with its generous donors, has invested over $67.5 million in funding more than 1,150 canine health research and educational grants. As a measure of its impact, CHF tracks peer-reviewed scientific publications stemming from its studies. To be published, the articles must pass rigorous evaluation by experts in the field to ensure the highest standards and validity of the findings. By contributing to the broader knowledge of canine health, these publications drive groundbreaking advancements in veterinary medicine. CHF-funded studies have appeared in veterinary-focused journals, such as the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and high-profile journals reaching broad scientific audiences, like Science and Nature Genetics.

We are incredibly proud of the immense work and dedication that CHF has put in to benefit the well-being of dogs everywhere.

Support the AKC Museum of the Dog Canine Cruise Benefit

The AKC Museum of the Dog will be hosting their Canine Cruise Chicago benefit on Friday, August 25th. This will be a festive night on board the Spirit of Chicago as you enjoy cocktails, a buffet-style dinner, an art-inspired silent auction, and dancing. Individual tickets and VIP tables are available for purchase HERE.

All proceeds from this special evening will benefit the AKC Museum of the Dog in New York City and enable the Museum to continue to care for canine art in its collection, provide educational programming for the public, and inspire positive engagement with dogs year-round.

Financial Protection for Your Club

And finally, this is a reminder that sound financial practices are an important part of protecting your club both now and in the future. It is crucial to remember to look at your club’s financial processes and ensure you have set the best practices in place for your club. Below are recommendations from major auditing companies and what AKC believes to be the best practices for success.

Ensure that the club’s treasurer and the Board of Directors are insured against misappropriation of funds through a Crime Policy and Directors and Officers insurance or bondings.

Establish a finance review committee of club members not involved in the treasurer’s duties.

Consider investing excess funds in an interest-bearing account or certificate of deposit.

Require a second authorized signer for all checks over a prescribed dollar amount, usually $250.

Have contracts and agreements in writing. Require that all activity-related contracts over a certain amount (e.g. greater than $250) for club related items be in writing and not verbally understood.

Publish the policies, practices, templates, and requirements to the club members and or on the club website or otherwise make them easily available.

Maintain records. Clubs should maintain all required activity – application, approval, revenue, expenses, and net income statements – documentation in an organized fashion and for a set time period. Ideally, the club may choose to retain such items electronically, such as a secured file on Google Drive or another cloud service, accessible by all current club officers.
