Table Talk · July 19, 2023

The Kennel Club of Palm Springs made a big announcement this past week when they notified the fancy that they will be moving their cluster to an alternative location on the same Empire Polo Grounds site immediately adjacent to the site where the shows have been located for the past several years.  For more information, you can view the complete announcement from KCPS at www.caninechronicle.com/?p=268021. The new site is larger and will allow the Kennel Club of Palm Springs to add 6 rings, more reserved grooming, motor home parking on grass, and so much more!!! We are excited to be part of the largest cluster in Southern California, which will be bigger and better than ever in 2024!!!! I will be sure to keep everyone posted as more information becomes available.

Sadly, the Vermont Scenic Cluster, which was scheduled for July 13-16, had no choice but to cancel their shows due to severe flooding. No club takes canceling a show without serious consideration, but sometimes mother nature leaves no choice. There is always next year, my friends!

I look forward to seeing many of you in Houston this week. Please be sure to stop by the Chronicle booth for a visit. Many of you have been pushing hard through what has been one of the warmest summers in years. Humans and canines are tired but continuing to do their best to put on a great show. Please remember that your colleagues (and canines) are as tired as you, and that extra kindness will go a long way!

The June show statistics are up on our website for those who have not had the chance to see them yet. The Canine Chronicle gets the statistics up as soon as humanly possible after the AKC releases them. Congratulations to one and all for your success, and best wishes for continued success through the remainder of the year. It is hard to believe that we are just about half-way through the show year already!!

The new AKC rule that provides for class animals who place in the group to receive the highest available points toward a championship based on the championship points of the breeds of dogs defeated in the group ONLY provides for points toward a Championship and NOT a Grand Championship. Further, it should be noted that this provision does not only apply to majors. If your dog only received one point for your win in breed competition, and the highest possible points earned by dogs defeated in the group provided for two points, the dog will get two points instead of one. If you are one of the fortunate exhibitors who receives a group placement from the classes, be sure to check the tear sheets for your group! It should also be noted that if you receive a major for a group placement, the judge that gave the dog the win in the breed will be considered the judge to give the dog the major, not the group judge. So, you’ll need to win the other required major under a different judge.

Thoughts are with Delores Burkholder whose Multiple Myeloma is in remission. Delores continues to receive chemotherapy and will be down to once-a-month chemo treatments soon!  Persevere and stay positive, my friend. Your dog show family is here for you!

It is a good thing that Bobby Schoenfeld inquired about his symptoms when not feeling well a couple weeks ago. Bobby was told to go to the ER immediately and it turns out he had a heart attack. After surgery to place two stints, I hear Bobby is on the mend!

Jackie Stacy continues to heal from her recent surgery and is doing well. We all look forward to having you back at shows as soon as you are able.

A reminder to those that are looking for a professional handler and choose to use social media groups to locate one. You must do your own due diligence if you choose to hire a handler using this type of resource. I strongly suggest asking for references, visiting the handler’s facility, and ensuring their vehicle has the necessary equipment and it is in good working order. Remember, not everyone who owns a truck and runs left-handed circles is someone that you want to trust with your dog. The dogs are counting on us to have their best interests at the top of the list of requirements when hiring a handler!

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week are:  Barb LaVere, Paul Clas, Angie Lloyd, Kristin Lyons, Mickey Feigelson and Tabatha Buckley-Bettis. Have a wonderful day, my friends. Make sure to celebrate with loved ones!

This week’s thought is in memory of our friend Mike Berry:  Goodbyes hurt the most when the story was not finished. We miss you, Mike!

Be safe out there my friends!  I look forward to seeing many of you in Houston this week!  Please join me for some Table Talk Live fun!  Until next time…
