To the Core : Updates from the American Kennel Club
Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure once again to share with you updates of the work and accomplishments that are ongoing at AKC. This 5th edition eon of “To the Core” will highlight some ongoing projects, AKC Meet the Breeds, Registration Highlights for 2022, Bred-by-Exhibitor rewards and AKC Humane Fund Breed Rescue grants.
AKC Meet the Breeds returns to New York City this month. The canine extravaganza is returning to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on Saturday January 28th and Sunday January 29th to engage the public and educate them about our unique breeds, responsible dog ownership, and breeding.
This family-friendly event will feature more than 130 breeds to pet and play with, exciting demonstrations, a kid’s zone and an abundance of expertise to help dog lovers and potential dog owners find the right breed for their lifestyle.
My personal thank you to the more than 130 clubs who have signed up and volunteered their time and their wonderful dogs for the weekend. We appreciate your dedication and enthusiasm to make this Meet the Breeds a success.
Litters and Dogs for 2022
2022 was another good year in Registration and breeder services and was our 8th consecutive year of increases in litters. To assist breeders, we added significant new features to the AKC Breeder Toolkit and made it easier for breeders to order duplicate litter kits and certificates. At the same time, we continued to expand breeder education via AKC Canine College as well as through live Breeder Symposium events. We look forward to working with breeders and providing them more tools be successful in 2023.
Rewarding Best bred-by-Exhibitor Breeders
Since 2019, AKC has recognized its breeders by offering a free litter registration to the winner of a Best Bred-By Exhibitor in Show competition at a designated All-Breed, Group or Parent Club show.
Since the program launched as a pilot, nearly 200 All-Breed, Group or Parent Clubs have taken advantage of this fabulous BBE Award. We encourage more clubs to sign up for this program.
If you would like to sign up your club for the award or have any questions regarding this award, please contact Vanessa Skou.
AKC Humane Fund Breed Rescue Grants
Breed rescue is a very important effort that our clubs undertake regularly with AKC clubs being the largest rescue networking in the nation. We want to remind clubs that the AKC Humane Fund’s rescue grant program provides financial assistance to not-for-profit canine rescue groups that are taking on significant, rescue-related expenses. Grants are used to help cover the costs of veterinary care, vital supplies and more. Please visit www.akchumanefund.org to learn more about this program or apply for grants.
These are just a portion of the news and work that is ongoing at AKC. I look forward to sharing these updates with you each month.
Until February…
Best,
