Arvindology: Our Journey Through the Sport of Purebred Dogs

Can we discuss the journey we take in the sport of purebred dogs? Or is it best to say evolution? The paths we choose and the path we travel into the sport/hobby we commit to is part of that journey. We all come to our sport due to our love of dogs and the love of competition; but through the years we evolve our niche and find our purpose. There are many factors to consider like finances, space, time, intention, but most importantly it’s about drive and motivation. These last two parts can be in unison or independent.

We start with competition. Natural winners/competitors possess drive; an all-encompassing and singularly focused drive that allows for tunnel vision. Real winners watch, observe, and measure. There are no barriers or impossibilities, but rather obstacles to overcome and conundrums to solve. Successful competitors do not hear “can’t”, “won’t”, or “maybe”. In the sport of dogs, it is coming from a place of yes and being innovative that makes competitors successful. Talent and knowing how to perform goes a long way, too. So how does this play in the journey? Many come for the competition–stemming from their love of dogs–then grow into breeders. There is no shame in being a competitor and exhibitor without being a breeder. There are many, many top handlers who evolve, and their journey moves them in the direction of perpetuating breeds in an effort to keep the sport alive and thriving. They want to keep the pulse and flow going. We are all a part of the whole.

Now, we get the journey many of us have experienced. There are many versions with various paths criss-crossing and flowing. I will speak from my experience and, hopefully, someone can relate. Sometimes we feel alone, but we are all moving together in the hobby. We start with a love of dogs, we stay for the love of dogs, and we sustain for the love of dogs.

So, we are led to my journey. I was one who was never given anything in life. Mind you, we didn’t struggle, and I lacked for nothing, but my parents believed that what you earn, you should value. My Asian tiger parents didn’t believe in failure. Success was measured in levels of attainment and recognition for achievements. They were immigrants, and proving yourself comes from deeds and hard work.
