Table Talk · June 30, 2021

Our friends in the Pacific Northwest are dealing with unusually high temperatures. In an area where temperatures in the summer typically do not exceed the 80s, they have soared to over 110 degrees. While some fanciers felt it was best for them and their dogs to skip shows last weekend, others were comfortable braving the elements and attending. Congratulations to the Clackamas Kennel Club for making it possible for exhibitors to attend the shows in Canby, Oregon, successfully. The club members and volunteers did not take the extreme temperatures lightly and did everything they could to make attending their shows safe and bearable! From a very pro-active veterinarian who walked the rings making sure canines were safe, to a cool room, to having Gatorade and water distributed to anyone who wanted it, those who attended were given as much support as humanly possible. There was ample transportation to rings in order to ensure that everyone at the show was given proper care. Well done, Clackamas Kennel Club!

Today marks the beginning of what seasoned fanciers call the Oklahoma/Texas March. The march begins in Oklahoma City with five shows, then on to Dallas for four, San Antonio for four, and Houston for five! The key, my friends, is to PACE YOURSELVES! When you are feeling weary, remember that last year at this time we were longing for any show! The time has come! Let the march begin!!! I would like to suggest that the motto throughout the next several weeks be “Kill ‘Em With Kindness!” Remember how hard these club members have worked to make the shows happen, and remember, the clubs can certainly use your help. The Southern Handler’s Charity League is looking for some new faces to assist with the hands-on Junior Showmanship Clinic in Oklahoma City this week. So, if you can spare a bit of time, please reach out to a Southern Handlers Charity League member or an AKC Rep and let them know you are available to help. I look forward to seeing everyone at the last stop of the march in Houston!! If you have not had an opportunity to view the segment I did with Tom Pincus, Cluster Chair of the Houston World Series of Dog Shows, hop on over to Canine Chronicle.TV and check it out. Tom and the volunteers of the Houston cluster have worked hard on a conformation-focused cluster at a world-class facility. I hope to see many of you there! Entries for Houston are open on the Onofrio website now.

Boxer fancier and professional handler Wendy Bettis has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is hospitalized receiving treatment. Wendy is a fighter and with everyone’s support she will beat this nasty disease. A GoFundME campaign has been initiated and the fancy has rallied to give financial support to Wendy and her family. It warms my heart to see how quickly our fancy rallies together during a fellow fancier’s time of need. We really have an incredible foundation of people who are always there for each other in tough times like this one. Our thoughts are with Wendy, Linda, Ron, Jimmy, Nathan and Matthew during this challenging time.

I was happy to hear that Louisville cluster chair David Johnson came through his recent hip replacement surgery with flying colors and is home healing. David, you truly are bionic at this point! I am sure you will be on your feet in no time, and we all look forward to having you back real soon.

Charlotte Patterson picked up food poisoning during her recent judging assignment, but she was able to get right back at it and judge on Sunday. This lady is yet another example of how tough our fancy is! Here is hoping you are on the mend, my friend!

We have a lot of fanciers celebrating birthdays this week. Angela Booth, Greg McCarthy, Maripi Wooldridge, Marietta Singleton, Robin Greenslade, Bruce Schwartz, Lisa Porter, George Marquis, Terri Galle, Tracy Szaras, Ashlie Whitmore, Heidi Gervais, Rod Ott, Bob Busby, Lydia Frey and Rachel Corbin are all celebrating their special day this week! Take some time for you, my friends and may you have many more happy, healthy years to come!

This week’s thought is appropriate for the beginning of the Oklahoma/Texas march: Optimism won’t change the situation, but optimism WILL change how the situation feels!!!! Be safe out there my friends. Remember to pace yourselves. I will see you soon down the road! Until next time…
