We asked experienced AKC judges two questions about current issues affecting our sport. Here’s what they had to say…

How is your perspective in the ring influenced by your continuing breeding and exhibiting?
Every time I am in the ring, I judge with the ex- pectations and empathy I have for every exhibitor. My sensitivity for the time and effort that goes into breeding, raising, training, and preparing a dog for the ring comes from years of doing it myself. I want my respect for that hard work to be evident. I cheer on every new exhibitor after settling their nerves. All of us in and around the ring are encouraged to join me in a “wave” when a new champion is crowned. I am elated when a quality dog wins and feel disappointed when the quality is lacking.
What are your expectations when you judge the Bred-by Exhibitor classes?
At the height of the British Empire in the early 20th century, of all the dominions, territories, and colonies, India was considered to be the “Jewel in the Crown.” I see the Bred by Exhibitor classes in the same light. Dazzle me with the crème de la crème of your breeding program. I want to see the shining star from your last litter whether it is still a puppy or ready to win a breed. As a fellow breeder, impress me with that dog you know speaks the standard. What a joy it is to find the best of the best in the Bred by Exhibitor classes.
