Table Talk – October 10, 2018
The Chinese Shar-Pei National is in full swing and for the second year in a row other responsibilities have prevented me from attending. I thought that I had accepted the fact that I could not be there until I started to see all my friends posts about packing up, driving, arriving, etc. I will say, however, that with all the social media options out there now, I feel so much more connected than I would if I wasn’t able to watch live streaming of classes, see photos of winners, and check the posting of results. Not only is the live streaming of shows great to keep those of us who are veteran dog people informed, it is also terrific outreach for the public! I must say, however, that with the Shar-Pei National, Montgomery County, and all of the other National Specialty shows that are being held this time of the year, my productivity is down! I just love watching those videos. A note of caution to my friends kind enough to post their videos live: be careful of your commentary while recording, or mute the volume!
The hard working Take the Lead fund raising committee is putting the finishing touches on the Take the Lead 25th anniversary/birthday celebration dinner that will be held at the Del Valle Show next weekend. The event is scheduled for Saturday night, October 20th, with cocktails beginning at 6 pm and dinner beginning at 7 pm. It will be held in the Palm Pavilion at the Alameda Fairgrounds. The entire evening has a birthday theme, and is shaping up to be a great time for all who attend. There will be a dessert raffle, and a fabulous auction/raffle. In addition, those who are more creatively inclined should create a birthday hat for the celebration! Tickets cost $65 per person or $455 for a table of 8. For more information about this spectacular event, or to buy your tickets in advance, go to www.takethelead.org. Tickets are going fast, so act now!
I am very excited to report that plans are under way for our Table Talk Live segments at the Orlando shows in December! I will keep you posted on what we have in store.
Last week I asked for thoughts regarding exhibiting recently finished champions in the classes at National Specialties as opposed to moving them up to Best of Breed competition. Thanks to those of you who responded to me. Most of the responses that I received were from readers with low entry breeds and all felt strongly that, once finished, class animals should be moved up to Best of Breed.
I had the chance to catch up with Ken McDermott after his 33rd Montgomery County judging assignment. He has decided that the time has come to go Emeritus. Ken has been judging for 40 years. During that time, he has judged Montgomery County 33 times and has had judging assignments at Westminster Kennel Club on 13 different occasions. We wish you the best, my friend, and look forward to seeing you ringside soon!
Bill Shelton and Steve Leyerly and their Coventry Pembroke Welsh Corgis are now settled into their new home in southern Missouri. Best of luck in your new home, my friends. Coventry will maintain a residence in California as well.
Our most sincere sympathies to Michelle Michael on the loss of her father. Our thoughts are with Michelle, and her family and friends at this most difficult time.
Our thoughts are also with Pilar Kuhn and Rod Ott. Rod’s father, John Ott, passed away at the age of 88.
A celebration of Clint Harris’ life will be held on October 27, 2018 (his birthday) at Captain’s Quarters, 5700 Captains Quarters Road, Prospect, KY 40059 from 5-7 pm. Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served, and many memories will be shared. Please RSVP to Clint’s daughter Barbie Johnson at bjrngma@gmail.com.
Healing thoughts to Murrel Purkhiser who tripped in the Minneapolis Airport and broke her pelvis. We wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to having you back in the center of the ring soon!
Congratulations to Remy Smith-Lewis and his new bride, Karissa, on their recent marriage. May you two lovebirds enjoy many years of love and happiness together.
Happy first anniversary to Kellye and Nick Riani! Time sure does fly! It seems that it was just yesterday that I was enjoying your wedding photos on social media.
Celebrating birthdays this week are: Liz Muthard, Michael Raulings, Jon Cole, Kelly Achenbach, Tenna Uyeno, Justin Smithey, Maureen McCreery, and Jen Reed.
Best of luck to everyone! May your ribbons be plentiful and your sportsmanship amazing! Safe travels. Until next time…
