Table Talk – July 4, 2018

It is hard to believe that the 4th of July holiday is here already! It seems that Memorial Day was just the other day. Time flies… Last year I was attending the Burbank Kennel Club and Ventura Dog Fanciers cluster on this same weekend. I know many of you, along with me, will miss the weekend at the beach this year. It was definitely one of my all-time favorite shows.

The Burbank Kennel club held their shows this past weekend at the Industry Hills Expo center in City of Industry, CA. With an entry of 1200 on Saturday, they held their own considering this was the first year on their own and at a new venue (for them).

I am attending the Summerfest cluster at the California State University Channel Islands Campus this coming weekend. This cluster picked up many of the specialties that previously held their shows with Ventura DFA and Burbank. This is the third year for this cluster to be held at this venue. The Committee has endeavored to work out the kinks and make this a pleasant experience for all. Here is hoping for cooler temperatures this year!

The past Saturday saw some folks at various shows electing to throw in the towel and leave after BIS due to the high heat index as even hotter temperatures that were predicted for Sunday. Kudos to you for knowing your limits and recognizing that the dogs cannot say no! Please do not misunderstand me: I am not judging those who feel that they have sufficient ability to keep their dogs cool. In times of extreme temperatures, what works for some does not work for others. What is critical is that we recognize our dogs’ limits and make their needs our top priority. Our own friend Connie Gerstner Miller experienced heat stroke with a 4½-month-old puppy. Connie said, “It can happen so fast”. Thankfully, Connie’s puppy is on the mend and will be fine!

I read that one of the individuals who stole the van with 14 show dogs in Redding, CA has been captured and is in custody. The Redding Police Department continues to search for the second suspect. A huge Thank You to the Redding Police Department for making this a priority. It was so lucky that the police found all of those dogs safe and alive.

I am thrilled to report that David Williams has reached another milestone in his recovery from major cancer surgery. He has been able to bring his dogs home with him! David has received positive feedback from his healthcare team and they will be discussing future treatment. Keep up the good work my friend!!!

Robin Stansell will not be walking the rings any time soon as he recovers from foot surgery. Doctor’s orders say twelve weeks with no weight bearing! Hang in there my friend the twelve weeks will be over before you know it.

Ryan Wolfe is also temporarily sidelined with torn ligaments, but he is sporting a quite fashionable boot. Take care of yourself Ryan and heal quickly!

Alberto Berrios is headed home from his lovely vacation in Norway. Safe travels back, my friend.

Happy anniversary to lovebirds Robin and Ken Greenslade who are celebrating 30 years of wedded bliss! We wish you 30 more!

Also celebrating an anniversary this week is Maria Arechaederra and David Mains who are celebrating 22 years of matrimony. May you guys have many more years of health and happiness!

Celebrating birthdays this week are: John Keil, Rod Ott, Laura King, Toshi Omura and Ron Spritzer.

My thought for the week is this: Those who breed haphazardly typically exit purebred dogs in 7-12 years and are filled with resentment – why? You need to be a student first! A layman doesn’t become a surgeon without schooling! (Thanks Dan Palantino!)

Happy 4th of July to all and please don’t forget that special nod to the cluster committees and others that work so hard to continue to make our dog shows happen week-in and week-out. Suggestions can be made with kind words, and a simple thank you goes a long, long way!

Be safe out there my friends! Until next time…
