“The True Essence of AKC Breeders”

I’ve just received the AKC Chairman’s recent report titled “The True Essence of AKC Breeders” Mr. Kalter expresses his hope that the AKC and dog breeders can prove to the general public that breeding happy, healthy puppies is the true goal of the people who are the caretakers of dogs and that those people who are breeding AKC registered puppies take this responsibility without question.
I wish that the task of changing the minds of so many people who see breeders as evil was as easy as his report makes it seem. But how can I agree when the AKC accepts registrations from anyone who sends in the correct paperwork and correct payment? How many stores are there across the country selling AKC registered puppies? How many of our peers, the people we see every weekend at dog shows, are truly responsible breeders? We all know or have heard about the well-known breeder who has way too many litters and then can’t take care of the puppies as they grow up. What happens to those puppies? Or the breeder who hides the hereditary problems his or her dogs carry and allows these dogs to be bred? And what about the breeder who sells to pet shops? All this makes the challenging job of trying to change the poor reputation breeders have received more difficult.
Unfortunately, those people who are out there promoting their lies about purebred dogs and the people who breed them have powerful people supporting them. There are famous people who have fallen for these lies. Some of these people are influential enough to pass laws that are aimed at the breeders who are sanctioned by the AKC.
Mr. Kalter writes:
“There is no doubt that we must change the conversation about our responsible breeders.
From unabashed lies to the truth.
From a cloud of doubt to clarity of trust.
From rumors and innuendo to factual reality.
From expediency in law-making to right judgment.
To accomplish this, we must have unity and dedication of purpose. In addition to all that AKC does now to add to the conversation, we will do more – especially by engaging the general public.”
Mr. Kalter, I’m sure that there are great numbers of us who will do anything to turn your statements into reality. But I do think we must start in our own “back yards”. Bring strength to the AKC and allow it to enforce the rules that will make it known that breeders are responsible and will protect dogs in every conceivable way.
