GROUP and BEST IN SHOW JUDGES Talk About Their Choices in Their Own Words…
After the show concluded on December 18, the canine chronicle asked the group and best in show judges to comment on their groups and placements. we also asked a simple question with many answers: dog show judging is rarely as glamorous as it seemed to be in orlando. why do they continue to devote their time and passion to judging?
THE SPORTING GROUP
The Sporting Group entered the ring with Mrs. Pamela Bruce of Etobicoke, Ont., Canada judging. Her comments follow:
“The AKC Sporting Group was my first assignment in this forum. Once I started judging, I was surprised how quickly I forgot about the timers, microphones, cameras, etc., and it was just about the task at hand. It was such a privilege to judge a group with depth from every breed. I was so impressed as this was one of the last shows of the year, and these dogs were in glorious mental and physical condition. I was equally impressed with how most handled the venue and the goings on.
There were dogs I was unable to cut that I could easily award groups to at another time. Be careful what you wish for—it became an arduous task to pick only four. In saying that—I enjoyed every second of it!”
Group One:
GCHS. Clussexx Man Of Steel
Clumber Spaniel
Bred by Jeane Haverick, Douglas A.
Johnson, and Jaime Hubbard
Owned by Clussexx, Reg., Jaime Hubbard,
W. & K. Holbrook, and B. Dowd
“This dog gave me goosebumps. He was the breed standard personified—long, low, and substantial. He had massive bone. He was sturdy, yet looked like he could do his job all day long. He was in flawless physical and mental condition. He and his handler were a phenomenal team. They were an absolute pleasure to judge!”
