Table Talk – December 12, 2018

I took a break from the happenings over at the Orlando Convention Center to give everyone an update on what’s happening here at AKC National Championship week in Orlando. When you walk into the convention center, the energy is electrifying. With some of the largest entries in the nation, people are sure to bump into folks from all over the country, in fact, from all over the world! I think I said hello at least 100 times before I got from one end of the building to the other this morning. What makes me smile about our dog family is one can go for an entire year between seeing someone and when you see them, it seems as if no time at all has been lost! While I recognize schedules are difficult, I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to catch up with those that you may not have the opportunity to see often. In addition, please keep a proper perspective. Be supportive of those that win, even if it is not you: someone else’s success takes nothing away from yours. Remember to win with grace and lose with dignity.

I walked over to a ring this morning to watch a breed with a couple of friends. There were plenty of seats ringside, or at least I thought so at the time. In a line of several chairs were three that were taken with a brief case, garbage, and one that even had food spilled on it. An individual came to pick up his briefcase and left the garbage behind! How disappointing. As a community, we need to take pride in our show space, respect our fellow exhibitors, and respect the venue. We are all busy, but we need to remember to pick up after ourselves, and our dogs, too!

A very big shout-out to Harry Miller and his crew for a job well done getting exhibitors in and parked! Everyone should take the opportunity to give the men in orange a nod, and a thank you when given the opportunity! In fact, if you see a cluster committee person, give them a smile and a thank you. People were working on that show floor as late as midnight last night getting things ready for this week. Thank you to all the hard working committee members for doing such an amazing job!

When I walked past the Junior Showmanship grooming area today, I was thrilled to see the amount of clothing that has been donated for the clothing swap! Please be sure to stop by and shop or swap!

Keep an eye on the Canine Chronicle Facebook page for Table Talk Live! updates from the show!

Please don’t forget the Royal Canin #teamdog Photo Contest contest which ends Sunday night! Royal Canin will give the winning parent club a $4,999.99 package for their national specialty at the Royal Canin Ring in Wilmington, Ohio. The prize is good for three years. All you have to do to support your parent club is upload a photo of your dog to royalcanincontest.com! There are already over 20,000 photos uploaded, so get busy!

The sport of purebred dogs is grieving the loss of Dr. Richard (Dick) Meen. Dick has touched the lives of so many in the sport and brought a smile to all he met with his dry sense of humor. Our hearts go out to John Reeve-Newson, his partner of 50 years, and their daughter, Sandra Pierce, at this most difficult time.

Sadly, Pointer fancier Peggy Lee Davis died suddenly from a heart attack. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends. Peggy was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Her sudden passing is a reminder that we should all be certain to have made arrangements for our dogs in the event of our sudden demise. We cannot expect that our “non-dog” family will understand how we would want our dogs cared for in the event of our sudden death. Fortunately, all of Peggy’s dogs are being cared for in the manner in which she would want as the dog community once again came together and rose to the occasion.

I was thrilled to hear that Virginia Murray came through her heart ablation surgery with flying colors and is on the mend. We look forward to having you back soon, Virginia!

The Forsyth Kennel Club canceled their show on Sunday, December 9th due to the impending winter storm. From what I hear from folks in the area, it was a good thing the club was proactive!

Happy 35th wedding anniversary to Tim James and his lovely bride! Terry Chacon and her dearly beloved are celebrating 46 years of wedded bliss. Peggy Beisel-Mcilwaine and her darling husband are celebrating 38 years of matrimony.

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Marilyn Funke, Paul Catterson, Luke Ehricht, Heidi Cole and Ashley Ryan.

Best of luck to all for the remaining days of this show year and safe travels. Do everything with a good heart and expect nothing in return and you will never be disappointed!

Until next time…
