Table Talk – October 3, 2018

The Terrier pilgrimage to Pennsylvania has begun! For many of our Terrier friends, Montgomery County weekend is their favorite weekend of the year! The weather looks great and I wish my terrier friends good luck and safe travels! A shout-out to Ken McDermott who will be celebrating his 77th birthday at the show by judging there for the 33rd time! I wonder if that is a record.

I was out in sunny Southern California for the Malibu Kennel club shows this past weekend. This is the first year that Malibu Kennel Club and Shoreline Kennel Club are holding their shows on separate weekends. I was saddened when the December cluster of shows dissolved since “The Holiday Cluster” was always one of my favorite clusters, even though I would have to fly directly from there to Orlando for the AKC National Championship week of shows. This year’s Malibu shows were held at the same Orange County Fairgrounds venue as the December cluster. The OC Fairgrounds continues to be one of the best venues for a dog show, in my humble opinion. Shoreline Kennel Club will hold their shows on the same weekend in December as they have in the past. I hope they have a successful show like Malibu did this past weekend. Next year, Malibu KC will be joining forces with Lake Matthews Kennel Club the weekend after Labor Day for four days at the fairgrounds.

Mother nature had a big surprise for the folks that traveled to the Virginia shows last weekend. Excessive amounts of rain and sloppy, muddy conditions required the club to cancel the majority of the circuit. Harry and John Miller and their crew worked diligently to pull out the rigs that were stuck. Hats off to these hard working guys who are always prepared and never disappoint the exhibitors!

Thanks so much to those of you who reached out to me regarding your thoughts on reserved, paid grooming. I did not hear from anyone that objected to the concept. A few folks felt strongly that there should be a portion of grooming that was “free” and un-reserved but most preferred the option of being able to reserve a grooming spot and these folks were willing to pay for the convenience. I did receive a suggestion that at least a portion of the reserved grooming fees go to a charitable cause.

This year’s Golden Retriever Club of America National Specialty that is being held at Purina Farms marks the 150th year of the Golden Retriever breed! This year the entry is 758, which includes 186 in the Best of Breed class. We wish the best of luck and safe travels to all the Golden enthusiasts attending the show.

We are in the midst of National Specialty season and, a result, I have chatted with a couple of folks who raised the issue of keeping recently finished class animals in the classes for the national. I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic, and I will report back to you what I hear! Please email me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com and let me know your thoughts regarding keeping recently finished (within the 30-day period stated by AKC) dogs in the classes for the national specialty.

Best wishes to Ryan Wolfe who is going under the knife for an ankle injury. Ryan expects to be back running left handed circles in 3-4 months. Stay away from those curbs, my friend!

Condolences to the family and friends of Norfolk and Cairn Terrier fancier Nan Anderson who passed away this past week. Most recently from Lexington, Kentucky, Nan bred Norfolks under the Tenterra Kennel name and Cairns under the LinCairn Kennel name.

The Pharaoh Hound fancy lost longtime breeder and exhibitor Pam Haig this past week. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.

Please don’t forget about the Take The Lead Birthday Bash Fundraising event Saturday evening at Del Valle following Best In Show. Tickets for the party can be purchased via the Take the Lead website. I look forward to seeing all of my friends at the party!

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Nick Phillips, Traci Clark, Lenny Brown, Ryan Wolfe, Sarah Krickeberg, Robin Novack, Andrea Robins, Corey Benedict, Loran Morgan, Cindy Stansell and Karen Mammano (have fun at Disney my friend!).

Travel safe all. Please try to be kind to your fellow fanciers and, if at all possible, embrace a Newbie!!!!

Until next time…
