Table Talk · September 18, 2024

This past weekend, a handler at the shows in Michigan was videoing her dog in the Winners class. Unfortunately, she got more than she bargained for with that video as she captured a handler with a different dog slapping the exhibit in the head. This video, and another video from the following day with the same, if not worse behavior, has gone viral on social media.

A complaint was filed, and the Committee determined the complaint should proceed to a Bench Hearing. Everyone should remember it is up to the Show Committee–not the AKC Executive Field Representative–whether a complaint becomes a hearing. If the complaint results in a hearing, the Show Committee is responsible for hearing the case and deciding as to whether the complaint is upheld or not. Should the complaint be upheld, the show committee makes a recommendation about punishment and that recommendation is sent to the AKC Compliance Department. Compliance may or may not accept the Committee’s recommendation. They can overturn the recommendation and increase or decrease the recommended punishment.

Videos and photographs on social media can be viewed by individuals that are not seasoned enthusiasts and cast a negative image for our sport. I believe in exposing individuals who do not treat dogs in the manner they deserve, but I also have concern about the general public viewing our beloved sport in a less than positive light. It’s the owner’s responsibility to make sure their dog is cared for properly. If that responsibility is not fulfilled, I think the owner should have the same punishment as the handler–if they are different individuals. It is my sincere hope that the owner in this case will take his responsibility seriously and do what is best for the dog.

Thank you for your healthy discussion regarding last week’s Table Talk NOHS topic. In summary, fanciers debated a potential entry fee for NOHS with some supporting a fee to cover costs and enhanced prizes, while others opposed additional fees while citing existing expenses and their perception of the program’s purpose. Many fanciers emphasized the need for licensed judges, equal prizes, and respect for the NOHS program. This coming weekend the Arapahoe Kennel Club will hold the inaugural Regional NOHS event. I look forward to talking about the event with the show’s organizers. Please stay tuned for more information.

I am sad to report the Mt. Palomar Kennel Club has disbanded due to the main members moving and no local interest to take over the club. The number of shows in the Southern California area have dropped dramatically over the last several years. If you live in the area and are not involved with a kennel club, please consider joining a club and lending a hand!

Congratulations to George Milutinovich who received AKC recognition for 25 years of judging!  The fancy looks forward to seeing you at more shows in the future!

My heart is breaking over the recent passing of AKC Judge and long-time fancier Douglas Holloway, Jr. known to those who loved him as Dougie. I have many fond memories of Dougie and Rita. We would visit at various shows; and we would have our customary deli visit every year in New York. I’ll always remember Dougie as a mentor, friend and fierce competitor.  Dougie had a wicked sense of humor and made having fun a priority for those who showed to him.  I’d like to share a perfect thought from Paul Clas about our dear friend Dougie Holloway:

“I will miss your humor. It was great to bring you a dog that you loved, but I also got a laugh out of your critique of my dogs that were mediocre. I never passed those critiques on to the clients. I loved your honesty, and always trusted your opinion. You always took the time to say hi. You will certainly be missed.”

Rest In Peace my dear friend.  Most sincere condolences to Rita, the rest of the family and friends around the world. The dog world will not be the same without you.

Carol Spritzer demonstrated her true determination and resilience when she completed her judging assignment with one arm after falling over a curb and fracturing her shoulder. Best wishes for a successful surgery and rehab.

Leslie Potts will have to run right-handed circles for a while after tearing her upper calf muscle.  Best wishes for quick recovery, my friend.

Dylan Kipp-Keith had to leave the dog show a week ago to make time for a trip to the ER due to severe pain while standing or walking. It turns out she has two herniated discs in her back. In true Dylan fashion, she had an injection and is back to work!

Huge congratulation to Bruce Schultz who, after 40+ years showing dogs, has his first Best In Show with a dog he owns! After four years out of the ring due to his fight against cancer, Bruce can now say he went Best In Show with HIS Golden Retriever! Congratulations on your owner-handled BIS, my friend!  This was so well-deserved!

Happy Anniversary wish to Jamie Souza Bartlett and Will Bartlett and Debbie and Steve Melgreen! Best wishes to both couples!

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include:  Michael Shepherd, Grahm Swayze, Vicki Mauk, Sandi Olsen, John Kolodziej, Scott Sommer, Robert Scott, Alaina Moulton, Angela Pickett, Breanna Uyeno, Debbie Thornton, Daniel Magee, David Stout, Tessie Savage, Sam Marquis, Colton Johnson, and Jim Moses. I hope you all have the BEST day!

Please be safe out there, my friends! I look forward to seeing those of you attending the Wine Country Circuit in Romulus, NY! If you have not yet purchased your tickets to the wine reception benefiting the Museum of the Dog, please do! Until next time…
