There has been much discussion this week regarding a rumor the American Kennel Club is going to start charging an entry fee for the National Owner Handled Series (NOHS). First, let me clear up the rumor. I contacted the AKC to ask if there was any truth to this rumor, and the answer was ‘No’. Please remember one thing–until you see it in AKC Board minutes, do not believe it! There may be some confusion because of the new Regional NOHS shows that are standalone events. Of course, those shows will require an entry fee.
In my humble opinion, clubs would not be out of line if they charged an entry fee to NOHS participants. The program has been quite successful in maintaining, or often increasing entries, but this is not without added expense and stress on the show-giving clubs. I have heard many differing opinions from NOHS exhibitors. Many of them would not have a problem paying an entry fee to compete in NOHS. Exhibitors want comparable prizes and ribbons, and they recognize these things cost money. There are many exhibitors who say they would continue to participate regardless of whether there is an additional fee, but others feel they “already spend enough money” and say they will NOT pay for NOHS. I would like to remind everyone that those individuals who do not show in the NOHS spend the same amount of money.
In many situations, not just dog shows, pilot programs are started with reduced or no fee to determine interest and work out the “bugs”. Another analogy is samples. Free samples are given out to determine market interest. If the market determines sufficient interest, those sample products are put into production and the public pays for them.
The NOHS Regional show is a new initiative. Please keep your eyes open for a Table Talk Live segment with Guy Fisher from AKC Club Development regarding the NOHS Regional Shows. If you have specific questions regarding this new initiative, please be sure to email me at Deb.Cooper@caninechronicle.com and I will do my best to get your questions answered during our segment!
I am pleased to report that Robin and Cindy Stansell have begun their journey home from New Zealand following Cindy’s hip surgery. Fortunately, screws and plates did the trick and Cindy did not require a total hip replacement. Unfortunately, there have been some missed connections, but hopefully soon they will find their way back to the US soon! Safe travels and best wishes to you for a speedy recovery.
It is with deep sadness I report that Wendy Bettis lost her long, difficult battle with pancreatic cancer. Wendy accepted her cancer diagnosis with determination and fought hard to beat this dreaded disease. She made every effort to live a normal life while doing what she loved–showing her Boxers. Wendy was only 55 years old. Please keep her parents Ron and Linda Mattson, husband Jimmy Bettis, her children and the rest of her family and friends in your thoughts at this difficult time.
Kristyn and David Stout have moved into their new home in Pennsylvania, and they are getting settled. I wish you the best in the next chapter of your lives, my friends!
There is still time to purchase tickets for the AKC Museum of the Dog Wine reception that will be held Saturday evening after Best In Show at the Wine Country Circuit in Romulus, New York. To purchase tickets, you can go to the Canine Chronicle Facebook page and search for the event and scan the QR code. It is sure to be a good time! I cannot wait to see everyone there!
Happy anniversary to Tammy and Greg Bohlke and Cheryl and Ron Purcell. Sulie Greendale-Paveza and Greg Paveza are celebrating their 45th Anniversary (these two lovebirds met in the elevator of a psychiatric hospital). May all of you have many more years of happiness!
A very Happy Birthday to Gene Blake who turns 88 years young this week. It seems impossible that Gene is over 80. He looks and acts like he’s 60! Other fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include Lorraine Rainwater, Diane Baker, Eric Glofka, Elliott Wentzel, Susan St. John Brown, Pam Beale, Corinna Ohrnberger, KayCee Klang, Richard Lawless, Holley Eldred, Bill Ellis and Tyler Mills. Happy Birthday to one and all! I wish you all another great year in 2025!
Remember my friends: Don’t listen to what people say, watch what they do! Behavior does not lie!
National Specialty season is in full swing! I wish all my fellow fanciers best wishes and safe travels to your National Specialty. I look forward to seeing everyone soon down the road! Until next time….
