Another Houston cluster is in the books, and for those with more stamina than me, another trek through Texas has successfully ended. I am amazed by those exhibitors (and dogs) who begin in Oklahoma and end in Houston–with 4 sets of 4- or 5-day shows on consecutive weeks–keep going! Having Houston’s entries back to the original size, and with all the special events, was fantastic. The spectator gate was great, and the entry was demonstrative of the work that went into organizing this cluster. Those interested in the National Owner Handled Series, please note that about 35% of Houston’s entry checked that NOHS box!! Tom Pincus and all the folks involved with putting on this cluster work very hard to make all exhibitors and clubs welcome. Make sure to check out the coverage Table Talk Live! provided on the Canine Chronicle Facebook page, website and Canine Chronicle TV!!
This year the Manchester Terriers held their national specialty in conjunction with the Houston cluster. They were very happy with the hospitality provided to them. For those low entry breeds or smaller clubs that are looking for a place to hold their national, I encourage you to reach out to Tom Pincus to discuss alternatives for holding your shows in conjunction with Houston.
In addition to great hospitality and kindness to all, the Houston folks are very generous! Take the Lead was the recipient of a large donation; and the Houston Police Department K9’s will also be receiving funds. Make sure you check out the Table Talk Live interviews with the Lead K9 Officer of the Houston Police Department Narcotics Detail, and the K9 CPR demonstration.
Every week I ask all of you to be safe in your travels. This statement I make week-in and week-out is truly heartfelt. There was definitely an angel sitting on Tiffany Skinner’s shoulder while she was driving home to Washington from Carmel, California. It seems her rig’s breaks malfunctioned in the mountains down the last grade. Tiffany was able to maneuver her very large rig down the grade to a truck runaway ramp where she was able get to safely. Tiffany, her team, and all dogs are fine! Congratulations on some GREAT driving, my friend! I am so glad everyone is ok! This is yet another reminder that we never know what is going to happen in our life, and when. Drive safely and respect those mountains!
It is with great sadness that I share the news that AKC Judge and Basset Hound Breeder Margaretta Patterson Kauffman has passed away just shy of 98 years of age. Margaretta was truly loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. I remember when she and Ned Kauffman were married several years ago. They made each other so very happy. While they did not have a long time to enjoy each other, they made the most out of the time they had together. I remember Margaretta as DeeDee Wells’ mother. While DeeDee was the one that bred and owned the Chinese Shar-Pei, I always loved Margaretta’s appreciation and love for our breed. I received this message from Margaretta’s daughter DeeDee: “She is now judging in heaven and celebrating with her family and many friends that have gone ahead of her.” Sincere condolences to DeeDee and the rest of the family on this huge loss. Marge will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her.
Happy Anniversary to Kellie and Steve Williams. Best wishes for a great day, and many more years of love and happiness going forward.
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week are: Judy Welsh, Connie Smith, Pam Desrosiers, Terri Giannetti, Jenny Listug, Stuart McGraw, Kyle Robinson, Dennis O’Connor, Shaun Garrity, Wayne Cavanaugh and Ann Viklund. May each of you have a great day, and a great year ahead of you! Happy Birthday!
This week’s thought: Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring–all of which have the potential to turn a life around. Taking this to heart could be the difference between a new exhibitor returning to our sport or never coming back!!!
Be safe out there, my friends. May you celebrate many great wins and have many beautiful puppies. At the end of the day, we all take the BEST dog home!! Until next time…
