Table Talk · July 26, 2023
As I sit at the Houston airport awaiting my delayed flight, I am reflecting on the past several days spent at NRG Stadium for the Houston World Series of Dog Shows. I must admit I am tired, but I am sure I am not as exhausted as Tom Pincus, Amiko Allen and all of the hard-working committee volunteers. This team is a well-oiled machine and leaves no detail unattended. Thank you to all for your hard work and dedication to this great event.
While the conformation entry was down a bit, the vendors and special events increased, the rescue groups were back and the judges education was well-attended. Guy Fisher presented the Show Chair 101 seminar, and more than 50 people attended. Check out the Table Talk Live segment with Guy on the Canine Chronicle Facebook page or website.
I’d like to give a shoutout to several friends that lent a hand this past week in Houston. I could not have done it without you guys!!! Big thanks to Tabatha Waters for all of your amazing work behind the camera, Tara Martin-Rowell for the use of your wheels, Blake Hansen for helping me schlep my big boxes, and Bill McFadden for your help on Sunday.
Clubs are finding it more and more difficult to secure affordable suitable locations for their shows. Some may not be aware that if a club holds their show consistently at a venue, they can control that location and may need to give their approval for another club to utilize that venue. While it is difficult for me to understand why a club would prevent another club from holding their show at the grounds on an alternate date, it apparently has happened more than once. Those clubs who are trying to use a venue and run into this situation can contact AKC Event Operations Support for assistance.
A friend of mine had a medical emergency recently which required the EMT’s to be called. Fortunately, she and her husband were able to confine her dogs prior to the arrival of the emergency workers. While we never think it will be us who may need emergency assistance, there is always a chance it could happen. We should all have a plan regarding what we would do with our animals in this type of situation. It is also a good idea to have stickers in your window and near your front door notifying first responders that you have dogs, and how many.
Did you know that Palm Springs, California has a new mayor?? The 2023 Westminster Kennel Club Best In Show winner Buddy Holly has been sworn in as the inaugural canine mayor of Palm Springs!!!! Way to represent the purebred dog community. Congrats to Janice Hayes and Buddy Holly!!
I am saddened to report that Rottweiler aficionado Jane Hobson passed away on July 18th. Jane was known for her talent and connection to her dogs. She was also known for her trademark hat and infectious smile. Jane will be sorely missed by the fancy and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Rest well, dear Jane.
A big shout out to KayCee Klang who competed in her first body building competition…and she won! KayCee has shown incredible dedication and discipline in her prep while continuing on with her handling career. She sets an example for us all and proves that it can be done! Not only did KayCee step on stage for the first time, but she won two classes and placed second in another. It is not often that a competitor steps on stage for the first time and wins their class. Way to go, Kaycee!!!
I would like to share words of wisdom from Pat Trotter about her views on an ethical breeder:
“The ethical breeder is a purist who does not expect his animals to earn their keep through stud fees and puppy sales. The ethical breeder lives for his dogs and not off his dogs. This breeder breeds for the enjoyment of the end product and the sense of accomplishment achieved by success. This success can come in the form of looking out the window in sheer pleasure as one of your dogs trots across the yard effortlessly, or it can come with accolades in the show ring.
Breeders must be constantly dedicated and rededicated to the fact that the most important thing a dog can be is man’s best friend.”
