Table Talk · January 6, 2021

Holiday Break?  What Holiday Break?!!  Many enthusiasts are hitting the road this week and heading for either the Clemson Kennel Club shows in South Carolina or the Nolan River shows in Glen Rose, Texas.  If you have the time, the volunteers of the Nolan River cluster could use a hand setting up their show on Thursday.  If you are willing and able, just show up at noon and they will put you to work!

I will be excited to see the depth of competition at the various shows as we start our show year.  Since there are very few shows on the schedule in January and February, I expect to see extremely competitive group and Best In Show lineups!  Best of luck to all!

The first half of the Brooksville cluster closed last week, and they have an entry that exceeds 3,000 dogs!  I have not seen Brooksville entries like that in decades.  This, in my opinion, is great news for our sport.  Fewer shows is not always bad news my friends!

California fanciers are hoping that the Sun Maid Kennel Club shows, scheduled for the first weekend of February in Fresno, are able to be held.  Entries for these shows opened last Wednesday. The club members have worked very hard to cover all their bases in order to ensure that the shows go on, and they have done everything in their power to keep costs down so some type of refund can be made to exhibitors in the event of a cancellation.  Rest assured that all club volunteers have worked very hard and continue to have the best interests of all exhibitors in mind.  Please be kind to these hard-working folks, my friends.  Trying to hold a dog show during these unprecedented times is a thankless task–especially in California!!

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Pat Dresser at the age of 91 years young.  Pat’s health was failing over the last few months and she communicated to her family and friends that she felt she had a good, long life.  Pat was well-respected and loved by all that knew her and her passing leaves a huge vacancy in the sport of purebred dogs.  Our deepest sympathy to her family and those close to her at this sad time.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the unexpected and sudden death of dog show photographer Rob Gerity, who suffered a heart attack.  I am sure those who had the privilege of knowing Rob and working with him will agree that he was a great guy.  Our sport needs great photographers, and his loss is another blow to our sport. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Condolences to Lois DeMers on the loss of her mom, JoAnn DeMers.  Our thoughts are with Lois and her family at this most difficult time.

Laura King has endured two great losses during this holiday season as she endured the loss of her mom Sandy King and her grandmother within days of each other.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Laura and Robin and their family at this sad time.

Healing thoughts to Don Sutton who is in ICU fighting for his life.  Our thoughts are with him and his partner, Steve Keating, as Don fights the good fight.  We are pulling you for you, Don!

Several fanciers are celebrating wedding anniversaries this week!  Happy Anniversary wishes to Lacy and Jeff Bauer, Dennis and Katey Brown, and Joan and Eric Liebes.  Best wishes for many more happy, healthy years together!

Celebrating birthdays this week are:  Katey Brown, Debbie Melgreen, Kayley Kovar, Harry Miller, Colette Keith and Eileen Hackett.  The happiest of birthdays to each of you.

To those of you who are making resolutions for this new year:  Please add kindness to your list.  A little kindness goes a long way in the crazy times we are navigating.

Be safe in your travels and may each and every one of you enjoy health and happiness in the new year.  I look forward to seeing everyone soon.  Be well!  Until next time…
