Table Talk · January 24, 2024

As if there was any doubt, Winter has definitely arrived! Yes, Mother Nature reminds us all who is in control this time of year! This past week the Rose City Classic held in Portland, Oregon–a favorite cluster of exhibitors in the Pacific Northwest that is well-attended by fanciers from around the country–was challenged by a horrible ice storm. Fanciers, including judges, those traveling in for judges’ education, sponsors, and exhibitors traveling by air, were stuck in airports across the country since Portland’s Airport was closed for many hours. When the airport finally opened, they were operating with just one runway.  While many determined travelers made it to the show, some ended up returning home. Those driving to the show experienced treacherous road conditions. On Wednesday, the front gate to the RV parking was frozen shut! The volunteers of the Rose City Classic, while always keep fanciers’ safety in mind, delayed start times for Wednesday’s Specialties, and Thursday and Friday’s all breed shows.  Congratulations to the volunteers for the hard work they put in to make the cluster move along in these very challenging circumstances.

Meanwhile, those attending another dog show favorite, the two-week Brooksville cluster in Florida, bundled up while braving rain and very cold temperatures. The volunteers responsible for running these shows work hard to make the cluster an annual favorite for so many.  Thank you for working so hard to put on great shows in less-than-ideal conditions.

By the way, both clusters had terrific entries and despite Mother Nature, a good time was had by all who attended.

The Indy Winter Classic–which closed last week–has 9,136 entries over five days. These numbers include their performance events!  While the significant entry increase can be attributed to the addition of an all-breed show on Wednesday, bringing the cluster to five days, the fact that they no longer compete with exhibitors heading to New York for Westminster is also a contributing factor.  The hard-working volunteers continue to find innovative ways to improve their cluster and attract exhibitors from all over the country.  This year, they have added a Sporting Show.  The Hoosier Kennel Club will be celebrating their 100th Anniversary and AKCTV will be covering Saturday’s show.

A message to those planning to go to the Lone Star State Classic held in Dallas on February 8-11, do not forget that entries close today at noon Eastern Time.  The superintendent is MB-F.  The shows have moved from their December dates.  I have to say that these folks really know how to put on a dog show!  If you cannot make it for this show, you should consider their July shows, or put it on your schedule for next February!  Dallas Market Hall is a wonderful venue for a show.

A warm welcome back to Debbie Davenport who ran her first left-handed circles this past week after hip replacement surgery.  It is great to have you back, Debbie!!

Last October Greg Reyna lost his valiant battle with cancer.  A celebration of Greg’s life will be held in Dallas at El Carlos Restaurant, 1400 N. Riverfront Drive on February 10th from 6-8 pm.

Great Dane fanciers are mourning the loss of Toni Walters-Scheer who passed away last week after a short battle with cancer. Toni was loved by all that had the pleasure of knowing her and will be greatly missed by the fancy.

It is with great sadness I share the news that Dasha Mlinarich’s mother passed away suddenly last week.  Please join me in expressing sympathy to Dasha at this most difficult time in her life.

Congratulations to lovebirds Richard Green and Kim Hall who were married last week.  May the two of you have an amazing life together filled with love, happiness, and canines!

Doug and Rita Holloway are no strangers to wedded bliss!  They are celebrating their 37th wedding anniversary.  Happy Anniversary my friends!  May you have many more years of health and happiness ahead.

Fanciers celebrating birthdays recently include:  Demery Livingston, Dick Schaefer, Kristen Dowd, David Cook, John Wade, Liz Milam, Penny Kretchmer and Dominic Carota.  May this next trip around the sun be the best yet for every one of you!!

Anyone who understands dogs knows this is true:  The only judgement and criticism anyone should worry about is that of a dog.  If dogs don’t like you, it is probably not good.

Be safe in your travels, my friends.  I will see you soon down the road.  Until next time…
