And we’re off! The 2022 show year had a fantastic start! With six all breed clusters around the country this past weekend, the sport is at full throttle after a short, twocweek break! It is great to see that all clusters were well-attended. Leading the pack with an entry of nearly 3800 dogs was the beautiful Kennel Club of Palm Springs New Year’s Classic, which is one of my favorite shows. It is always great to see the faces of those who walk on to the show grounds for the very first time. That look of awe in exhibitor’s eyes and smiles on their faces is uplifting, to say the least. All of the volunteers were thrilled to be back after a one year absence due to COVID.
The planning and execution for a show like Palm Springs takes a village. This year, the Kennel Club of Palm Springs reached out to community groups to assist with important tasks: Girl Scout Troop 579 was on deck to assist club volunteers, and The Crew’s leader, Sergio Brown, reached out to the local college baseball team for assistance, as well. Many thanks to the College of the Desert’s baseball team, and the Girl Scouts from Troop 579 for all of their help!
Fanciers were pleasantly surprised to find grooming tent lighting at this year’s show. This was a new feature for 2022. All grooming tents had power, which is a great benefit to exhibitors. Job well done to one and all involved with putting on one of the most beautiful shows of the year!
On Saturday morning January 8th, an exhibitor’s van was stolen from South St. Paul, Minnesota. Sadly, Jasper the Boxer was in the van and is still missing. A reward is being offered for Jasper’s safe return. Anyone having any information that may assist in getting Jasper back home, including sighting of a 2013 Silver Chrysler Town & Country van with Illinois license plate AH26052, should contact Michelle Baker at 563-940-6244. Surveillance photos of a person of interest can be found on Michelle’s Facebook page.
There has been a great deal of discussion recently about what is fair to expect from Juniors that are hired to assist handlers at shows. One of the debates that has gotten a lot of discussion is whether Juniors should be allowed to leave the setup to show in Juniors, if their ring time falls during crunch time. In my opinion, these are details that should be clearly agreed upon prior to hitting the road. If a Junior is traveling with a handler for the specific purpose of showing in Junior Showmanship, that should be spelled out; and if the agreement was they would be allowed to show in Juniors–crunch time or not–they should be allowed to show. Having everything agreed upon early is key, in my humble opinion.
Congratulations to the Central Iowa Kennel Club that is celebrating their 75th year as a kennel club in 2022! Keep your eyes open for information about plans for Central Iowa’s shows this year.
Fanciers who were planning to attend the Colorado Kennel Club cluster February 18-20 in Denver should make alternative plans since, unfortunately, the cluster has been cancelled for this year.
Congratulations to Devon Kipp Levy and Adam Levy on the birth of their baby boy, Ashton, born on January 4th at 8 pounds, 15 ounces and 19 inches long. Enjoy your new bundle of joy, my friends!
Celebrating birthdays this week are: Colette Livingston-Keith, Chandler Becker, Chris Erickson, Garry Newton, Samantha Whitlow, Ken Latimer, Tara Schultz, Maggie Peat, Karen Livingston, Tina Dougan, Rhanda Glenn, Connie Wagner and Cheslie Pickett-Smithey. Enjoy your special day, everyone!
Please remember, my friends: Showmanship and sportsmanship are just as important as the dog at the end of your lead! Be kind to all, thank our hard-working volunteers, join a club, and lend a hand!
Be safe out there! Until next time…
