It’s Wednesday and, by now, many owners, breeders, and exhibitors of the best dogs on the planet are on their way to the Big Apple for the 149th Westminster Kennel Club dog show. The excitement of being back in New York City is felt not only by exhibitors but by the public as well. Good luck to everyone who is showing a dog at WKC. Please take a moment to enjoy your time in the city. Be sure to spend time with those you only see occasionally by sharing a meal or a beverage of your choice if not more.

Today is the day that entries close for the Renaissance Cluster in Madison, Wisconsin. These shows have grown by leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. There are soooo many specialties and supported entries. Come join the fun February 20-23rd! If your plans have changed and you have already purchased reserved grooming, the cluster will issue you a refund for your grooming space. That’s customer service!
This past weekend the Indy Winter Classic Dog Show was held in Indianapolis. This year’s cluster had close to 10,000 conformation entries over the 5 days. There were many supported entry and specialty shows, a pee wee event and the groups were televised on AKC.TV on Saturday. The Cluster volunteers do a great job of public outreach, and the show has great spectator participation as a result. I must commend all of the exhibitors who took the time to talk with spectators, and the feedback from those watching the show has been terrific! It is always great to see the public getting on social media to say what a great time they had and how much they learned! Let this be an inspiration to us all.
Our fellow fancier and Hoosier Kennel Club member Alan Hargrave once again used one of his many talents to help raise money for Take The Lead. Alan created a hand-made quilt that was on display in Indianapolis from Wednesday-Saturday then raffled off. The raffle raised $1,300 for Take the Lead. Thank you, Alan, for always supporting the sport.
For those coming to Louisville, please be sure to get your grooming reservations in as soon as possible. If you are paying online at Executive Dog Shows, you will also need to complete the grooming reservation form and email it to LouisvilleGrooming@yahoo.com. The grooming form has instructions for how to pay on the website. BE SURE TO PUT THE NAME OF THE PERSON WHO HOLDS THE CREDIT CARD THAT IS BEING USED ON YOUR RESERVATION FORM!
And baby makes four! Congratulations to Ashlie Whitmore and Alfonso Escobedo who are expecting a baby girl in July. The photos of the gender reveal were so much fun! Thanks for sharing them with us.
If you have a litter of puppies and live in the Colorado Springs area, Under The Sun Training and Daycare is looking for puppies for their upcoming puppy yoga event on March 22nd. Please instant message Heather Johnson if you able to help.
Did you know the American Kennel Club Registered Handlers Program has a ‘Banking the Breeds’ program designed to help handlers keep their records to assist them in preparation of applying for a judging license? While you may or may not be sure that you want to apply for your license, it does not hurt to keep your records in order in case you decide to take that step. While this program has been in place for many years, most people are not aware it exists. If you would like to take advantage of this benefit to AKC RHP members, the following information should be emailed to Marliese Moody (Marliese.Moody@akc.org):
- AKC RHP registration number and name
- Dogs finished, maintained and/or campaigned
- Litters and/or Champions bred
- Stewarding Assignments
- Sweepstakes/Match judging assignments
All information supplied will be provided when a member decides to apply for a judging license.
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include Katie Bernardin, Erin Hall, Chris Margeson, Luiz Abreu, Pam Bruce, Larry Cornelius, Sandy Bingham-Porter and Billy Wheeler. Have a great day and may you all have many more fabulous birthdays in the future!
This week I’m sharing words of wisdom from Albert Einstein: Do not grow old, no matter how long you live. Never cease to stand like curious children before the great mystery into which we were born.
Be safe out there, my friends. I hope to see you in New York. Until next time…
