For the first time in over five years, I jumped back in the show ring! This past weekend, I took my puppy to the dog show, and we ran left-handed circles together. To be honest, I didn’t know how it would feel, or if I would even remember what to do, but fortunately, it really is like riding a bike! I did not think I actually missed running left-handed circles, but the minute I got in the ring, I realized how much I really enjoy it.

Our first time in the ring together was more of a trial and error, “work out the bugs” experience. (Yes, I was that guy; the one who trains their dog in the ring!) We got third out of four in our class. The ultimate end-result, we had a blast together and learned what we need to do to work better as a team. The second day, with a different collar, better lead placement, different speed, etc., I had his breeder take him into the class so I could watch what would make him look his best. When we went back in for the Winners class, we worked much better together. We were awarded Winners Dog for a 4-point major! The ultimate end results? We had a blast together and learned more about what we need to do to work better as a team. Am I thrilled with a 4-point major toward my puppy’s Championship? Of course! However, the joy I felt presenting my dog was amazing. It is the best of both worlds. I have a pet that I love to pieces, he is a beautiful specimen of the breed, and we can have fun in the ring together.  Imagine how much fun we will have when I get him trained!

My sentiment is renewed:  Enjoy the moment. The sport should be fun for both owner and dog.  Enjoy the whole ride and love your dog. I enjoy conditioning my dogs and have been rewarded for that dedication through the years. Conditioning is a great way to bond with your dog, and it could give you that extra “leg up” in the ring.

How ironic is it that right around what should normally be Westminster week, they started the internal demolition of the Hotel Pennsylvania? There have been several threats in the past about the demolition, but every year we would return to New York, and to the Pennsylvania for The Progressive Toy Show and the huge Canine Chronicle bash of years past. Many fanciers would stay at “The Penn”, primarily for the convenience and the nostalgia. We all have special memories of “The Penn”, and it will certainly be missed; but it was time for it to go!

I have great news for those fanciers who are planning to attend shows at the Meadow Event Park in Doswell, Virginia! The facility has amended its policy and will allow dogs and equipment to remain in the building overnight. The building will close at 10 PM and open at 6 AM. We were just talking about how great that facility is, and how quiet it has been with no grooming in the building. If you have not been there and have the opportunity, please check it out!

Sadly, the Channel City Kennel Club in Southern California has cancelled their shows July 8-10, 2022, due to venue issues. The Club looks forward to seeing everyone back at their shows in 2023.

The Mid-Hudson Kennel Association in Hudson Valley, New York is looking for new members and fanciers willing to help with their shows in June. Sadly, if the club cannot find new members and volunteers to assist with their shows, this will be the last year they will be able to host shows. If you live in the area, please consider reaching out and lending a hand to a very worthy club.

We have many friends vacationing this week! Keith Bailey is off to Tanzania for some R&R.  Enjoy the experience, Keith! I look forward to seeing photos. Lynn Comstock is on another adventure on horseback. What a great way to spend time relaxing by cruising on horseback!  Janice Hayes is off to the Bahamas where the weather looks phenomenal. Mercedes Vila and Loran Morgan are getting their R&R in Costa Rica. Have a great vacation and we wish you all safe travels home!

I am sorry to report that Candy Way relayed the news, Terrier Judge Tom Ward has passed away. Tom was known for breeding West Highland White Terriers and Affenpinschers under the Donnybrook prefix. Our sympathies go out to Tom’s wife Billye, and the rest of his family. Tom will be missed by all in the fancy who knew him.

Kim Haupt is back home after a short stay in the hospital. The dog fancy once again was there for a fellow fancier when the need presented itself. We are glad you are back home, and hope you feel better soon, Kim!

Chris Ann Moore had an unexpected stay in the hospital due to an infection in her recently replaced knee! Chris Ann thanks everyone for their kind thoughts. Take care of that knee, my friend!

Melinda Lyon is back home from the hospital once again, and she is looking forward to seeing everyone in Louisville in March!

Happy Anniversary to Louisville Cluster Chair David Johnson and his wife, Laura!

Congratulations to Christian Rutten and Megan Honari on their engagement! We can’t wait to hear the date of the nuptials!

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week are:  Bergit Kabel, Cassidy Jackson, Lenny Gremminger, Colette Seror, Erin Olsen, Blair Commisso, Allison Sunderman, Kate Berry, Susanna Bjornsson, Diane Severns, and Lauren and Stephanie House.

In honor of Valentine’s Day this week, I leave you with this thought:  Love is the greatest refreshment in life!

Be safe and kind my friends! Give your dogs an extra hug (and maybe a treat or two) this week!  Until next time…
